A metal surface inspection device which does not perform excessive detection of a harmless flaw, for example, a gloss mark. This task is achieved by providing a first discrimination portion which compares a difference value and a predetermined threshold value for discriminating the presence of a defect on an inspectable surface. This discriminated result is “provisional” and a final discrimination result is obtained by the operation of a second discrimination portion. Here, among the discriminated results of the first discrimination portion, the discrimination duration time corresponding to a harmful flaw is shorter and to the contrary the discrimination duration time corresponding to a harmless flaw is longer. Consequently, the difference between a harmful flaw and a harmless flaw are distinguishable by adjusting a discrimination reference value in the second discrimination portion.

Disclosed is a method for measuring a pitch of a stranded cable which includes the steps of (A) manufacturing a stranded cable by stranding at least two wires; (B) irradiating a parallel ray on one side of the stranded cable moving at a regular velocity, and receiving the parallel ray at the opposed side of the stranded cable; and (C) determining a stranded cycle of the cable on the basis of a light-receiving quantity pattern on the opposed side corresponding to a stranded pattern of the cable, and then measuring a stranded pitch of the cable by calculating a moved distance of the cable during the stranded cycle. This method enables to measure a pitch of a spirally stranded cable in real time at a low cost.

A receiving lens (12) defines an optical axis (14) extending through the object, and an origin (0) located on the optical axis within the object and spaced a predetermined distance (S) from the receiving lens (12), for generating a direct image of a front surface section of the object. A first mirror (16) is spaced a first predetermined distance (L1) from the origin (0) on another side of the object relative to the receiving lens (12) for generating a first mirror image of a first rear surface section of the object. A second mirror (18) is spaced a second predetermined distance (L2) from the origin (0) on another side of the object relative to the receiving lens (12), and on another side of the optical axis (14) relative to the first mirror, for generating a second mirror image of a second rear surface section of the object. The first and second mirror images are each defined in part by a first and second central ray (18, 22), respectively, and each central ray forms an angle of incidence (.theta.1, .theta.2) on the respective mirror. The first and second predetermined distances (L1, L2) and the angles of incidence (.theta.1, .theta.2) of the mirrors are each selected to simultaneously generate at least three spatially distinct, non-vignetting images forming a 360.degree. view of the surface area.

A very efficient container transport and a high inspection accuracy are achieved with such an assembly.
