Abstract:
A pioneering process of inducing a photochemical reaction involves upconverted fluorescence from a rare earth ion doped inorganic glass, crystal or other inorganic material. An inorganic host material doped with a rare earth ion capable of upconversion fluorescence is provided. A photoactiveable organic material is positioned at a surface of the inorganic host material, and radiation is directed at the inorganic host material to cause multiple photons to be absorbed by the rare earth ion. A single photon is emitted from the rare earth ion and is absorbed by a chemical species in the photoactivateable organic material to induce a chemical reaction.
Abstract:
Compositions for use in optical fiber coatings and optical fibers and optical fiber arrays using these coatings are disclosed, as are methods for making the same. The compositions comprise a combination of two different radiation curable urethane oligomers, and can further comprise one or more reactive monomers. One of the oligomers has at least three functional groups that can undergo radiation cure.

Disclosed herein is a method of producing a hydrogel without using crosslinking agents or reducing agents of low-temperature redox initiators as used in conventional gelation, for example, without detrimentally influencing the state of emulsion in emulsion polymerization, and capable of conveniently forming a crosslinked synthetic polymer. Thus, disclosed herein is a method for producing a synthetic polymer gel, comprising steps of preparing an aqueous solution comprising at least one persulfate and at least one type of water-soluble vinyl monomer chosen from among compounds having an acryloyl structure, then irradiating said aqueous solution with UV light. Also disclosed is the optional method further comprising a step of preparing an emulsion wherein said aqueous solution is emulsified in a water-immiscible medium.

Processes for the living polymerization of olefin monomers with terminal carbon-carbon double bonds are disclosed. The processes employ initiators that include a metal atom and a ligand having two group 15 atoms and a group 16 atom or three group 15 atoms. The ligand is bonded to the metal atom through two anionic or covalent bonds and a dative bond. The initiators are particularly stable under reaction conditions in the absence of olefin monomer. The processes provide polymers having low polydispersities, especially block copolymers having low polydispersities. It is an additional advantage of these processes that, during block copolymer synthesis, a relatively small amount of homopolymer is formed.

A process for producing a polymer optical waveguide in which all of one or a plurality of start points and all of one or a plurality of end points of a wave guide are uniformly aligned along a same single straight line. The process comprises the steps of: preparing a mold comprising a concave portion for forming a core; bringing a cladding substrate into close contact with the mold disposing a concave portion toward the cladding substrate; filling the concave portion of the mold with a core-forming curable resin; curing the core-forming curable resin in the concave portion to form a core; and cutting a cladding substrate possessing a core part and a cladding layer thereon along the same single straight line.

The present invention has for its object to provide a curable composition which, despite its low viscosity, gives a cured product with a high gel fraction, low residual tack, low modulus, high elongation, and good flexibility. The present invention relates to a curable composition comprising the following two components: (A) a vinyl polymer having at least one crosslinking silyl group on the average per molecule: and (B) a photocurable substance, (C) an air oxidation-curable substance, (D) a high molecular plasticizer, (E) a reactive plasticizer or (F) a compound having one silanol group in its molecule and/or a compound capable of reacting with moisture to give a compound having one silanol group in the molecule.

A radiation-curable fiber optic coating composition for an inner primary coating includes a coloring agent, preferably a dye or a dye precursor, compatible with the fiber of the fiber optic and capable of imparting a pre-selected color to the inner primary coating, or another coating. The coloring agent can be a reactive dye. Any of the dyes preferably is stabilized by a stabiliser in the colored coating layer, or, preferably, in a more exterior layer.

A method of forming a film laminate uses an adhesive composition containing at least three components A, B and C. The method includes providing a radiation curable adhesive that contains a) a compound bearing at least one epoxy group, b) a compound with at least three OH groups and a molecular weight below 400 and c) a photoinitiator which initiates a polymerization of components a) and b) after exposure to light with a wavelength of 100 to 600 nm.
