The invention relates to a method for collecting a traffic-related toll fee in a tolling system for at least one vehicle engaged in traffic. The method has the steps of wirelessly receiving and data-processing at least one first message from a group of multiple vehicles, said message being generated and wirelessly transmitted by a first vehicle as a result of an extraordinary traffic event detected by the first vehicle, and collecting a traffic-related toll fee for a second vehicle, which has likewise detected the extraordinary traffic event, depending on the result of the data-processing of the first message. The invention also relates to a vehicle device and to a central data-processing device with which at least sub-steps of such a method can be carried out.

Identifying a vehicle in a toll system includes accessing image data for a first vehicle and obtaining license plate data from the accessed image data for the first vehicle. A set of records is accessed. Each record includes license plate data for a vehicle. The license plate data for the first vehicle is compared with the license plate data for vehicles in the set of records. Based on the results of the comparison of the license plate data, a set of vehicles is identified from the vehicles having records in the set of records. Vehicle fingerprint data is accessed for the first vehicle. The vehicle fingerprint data for the first vehicle is based on the image data for the first vehicle. Vehicle fingerprint data for a vehicle in the set of vehicles is accessed. Using a processing device, the vehicle fingerprint data for the first vehicle is compared with the vehicle fingerprint data for the vehicle in the set of vehicles. The vehicle in the set of vehicles is identified as the first vehicle based on results of the comparison of vehicle fingerprint data.

A system and method for vehicle lane determination using a CMOS image sensor camera to take periodic (or continuous) images of the road ahead of a vehicle. Using image processing techniques by counting how many road stripes or lines are to the left and right of the vehicle the current lane could be determined of that vehicle. Other information could also be determined by looking to see if the lines are solid or striped. Further embodiments include the use of a cellular telephone as the image sensor and to transit position information to a back office.
