The film forming organic phase is selected from substituted starches having a degree of polymerization; degree of substitution and viscosity such that the substituted starches are insoluble in water during mixing but dissolve at a higher processing temperature during forming, setting or drying of the composite. Thus, excessive migration of the substitute starch is prevented and the composite is substantially strengthened.

The invention is directed to a co-crystallized product and a method of making the product. The product comprises a polyol and a hydrogenated maltodextrin that have been co-crystallized together. The co-crystallization of polyols and hydrogenated maltodextrin according to the invention provides a sweetener product that is sucrose-free, yet has a reduced sensory cooling effect compared to the original polyol(s). The reduced sensory cooling effect is due to an increase of the heat of solution that is observed when polyols are co-crystallized with hydrogenated maltodextrin. Because the product of the invention is a sucrose-free sweetener that does not demonstrate the strong sensory cooling effect typically found with polyol sweeteners, the invention has a wide variety of applications which previously are not available for polyol sweeteners.

The invention relates to a water based polymer composition comprising a biopolymer and a synthetic polymer resin. The biopolymer results from a mechanical thermoplastic processing of a polysaccharide and/or protein starting material using shear forces in the presence of a crosslinking agent. The synthetic polymer resin consists of a water based hydrophilic resin and/or hydrophilic/hydrophobic resin. These compositions have a good storage stability. They are intended for the production of coatings with fair properties.

A water-soluble film for packaging a non-liquid product is disclosed. The film is made from a hydrolyzed copolymer of vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate in the range of from about 30 to about 95 percent by weight, modified starch in the range of from about 8 to about 30 percent by weight, plasticizer in the range of from about 5 to about 30 percent by weight, lubricant/release agent in the range of from about 0.0 to about 1.5 percent by weight, and surfactant in the range of from about 0.01 to about 1.5 percent by weight. The increased starch content of the resultant film lowers production cost, but creates physical incompatibilities for use with liquid products.
