The present invention is directed to a method for producing a high gloss coating on a printed surface. In the present method, an aqueous coating composition is deposited onto a surface to be printed using a blanket roller coating face which is a low energy, non-stick, smooth surface profile. In the present method, simultaneous with the deposition of aqueous coating onto a substrate, or shortly thereafter, pressure either alone or in combination with heat may be applied to the coating in order to create a substantially tack-free surface conforming to the surface of the coating face. By using a highly polished coating face, high gloss coatings may be readily obtained using this methodology in a number of traditional printing techniques including wet trap inline sheet-fed printing, heat-set offset printing, dry trap inline flexographic printing, offset web-fed printing and gravure printing. Coatings which are produced utilizing the present invention have high gloss values heretofore unobtainable using aqueous coating compositions.

The process is composed of the following steps: (a) production of the fresh wiping solution, (b) introduction of the fresh wiping solution into one or more wiping tanks, where it is contaminated by the inks. In addition, it comprises the following steps: (c) treatment of the used solution exiting from the wiping tank or tanks with a chemical agent, producing a solution and sedimented ink, (d) separation by settling of the solution obtained in step (c), producing a clean solution and a concentrated solution with sedimented ink, (e) filtration of the concentrated solution, producing a clean solution and solid waste, and (f) use of the clean solution obtained in steps (d) and (e) as fresh wiping solution.

An apparatus for cleaning a surface is disclosed, the apparatus comprising an elongated housing having at an end thereof an edge which surrounds an opening; a jet or spray nozzle, which is disposed in the housing and spaced from the opening, for jetting or spraying a cleaning liquid on the surface through a portion of the opening, said portion having a perimeter; a supply channel connected to the nozzle for supplying the cleaning liquid; rubbing means for mechanically treating the surface, which are rotatably mounted and which extend from within the housing towards the opening and are disposed along said perimeter; said rubbing means and said housing defining a suction chamber; an evacuation channel connected to the suction chamber for maintaining a sub-pressure in the suction chamber in order to remove the cleaning liquid drawn from between the rubbing means and any material released from the surface. The apparatus is especially suited for removing ink-accepting areas from a lithographic printing master so as to recycle the lithographic substrate.

A printing screen cleaning and reclaiming apparatus comprises a cleaning device defining a cleaning and reclaiming path and a plurality of low pressure-high volume water washoff stations, in series, along the path. An ink degradent, an emulsion remover, and a degreaser are each applied successively along the path, and an ink removal station, an emulsion removal station, and a degreaser removal station are positioned successively along the path to provide the low pressure-high volume water washoff. Each station is capable of delivering washoff fluid to the screen of up to 20 feet in height and any length in the range of approximately 40-400 psi, and in the range of approximately 10-250 gallons per minute for efficient and inexpensive cleaning of the screen.

To provide a printer ink exchange apparatus which can 1 greatly shorten a wash liquid recovery time, 2 dissolve a dilution by the residual wash liquid in the ink circulation and supply passage so that a lowering of the ink viscosity (density) can be prevented and 3 dissolve a mixing of the ink of the previous order in the ink circulation and supply passage so that the ink for a new order is prevented from becoming turbid, and as a result, can enhance the productivity and the printing quality. At the time of washing, the selector valve 26 is switched to the direction of the ink tank 4, wash liquid is supplied from the wash liquid pipe 16 to the ink circulation and supply mechanism, same as in the conventional ink exchange apparatus, the ink circulation and supply mechanism is washed and the waste liquid (wash liquid after used for washing) is recovered into the waste recovery unit 25, then the ink tank 4 in which ink for a new order is contained and the ink supply pipe 8 of the ink circulation and supply mechanism are connected together, the selector valve 26 is switched to the direction of the waste liquid recovery unit 25, ink 3 is supplied for a certain time, and together with said ink 3, the residual waste liquid (residual wash liquid) is forcibly discharged into the waste liquid recovery unit 25. In this state, when a certain time passes, or when the color of returning liquid comes to a certain deepness, the selector valve 26 is switched to the direction of the ink tank 4, the ink 3 for a new order is circulated in the ink circulation and supply mechanism and the ink 3 is supplied between the inking rolls 1, 2 of the printing unit.

A flexographic printer in which ink supplied into a nip portion of inking rolls. The inking rolls include a rubber roll and an anilox roll. An inking roll cover is provided around the inking rolls. Clean air is directed into the inking roll cover through a filter, such as by a fan which blows air through an air vent into the inking roll cover so as to form a slightly higher static pressure within the inking roll cover than in the peripheral area. As a result, air is ejected to the outside of the inking roll cover from a gap between the inking roll cover and the printing cylinder. A dynamic pressure caused by the air prevents paper dust, paper scraps or other scattering dust, etc., from coming within the inking roll cover, thereby preventing such from sticking on the outer circumferential face of the rubber roll or the anilox roll, or from mixing with the ink supplied into the nip portion of the rubber roll and the anilox roll.

An oscillator screen cleaning apparatus includes an enclosed housing which forms a cleaning chamber having a plurality of spray nozzles positioned therein to spray a printing screen with cleaning solvent. An oscillating mechanism is mounted within the cleaning chamber to move the screen in an oscillating motion in front of the spray nozzles to provide an efficient and effective cleaning of the printing screen. The spray nozzles are arranged in two opposing grid patterns and the screen is oscillated between the grid patterns to provide complete coverage of the screen with spray cleaning solvent. The sprayed solvent is collected, filtered and resprayed onto the screen, and the high spray rate of the apparatus ensures effective cleaning with the re-used solvent. The entire spray system is enclosed within a housing which is coupled to a vapor recovery system so that solvent and solvent vapors do not escape into the environment. The apparatus provides rapid and efficient cleaning of the printing screen with cost-effective re-use of the solvent and contaminant of the solvent to produce a safer work environment.

Apparatus for washing-down serigraphical frames by means of a cleaning liquid comprises a sing-like unit having V or U-shaped ends, in which unit the serigraphical frames are placed, a scavenging hose with affixed brush, a filter section, a circulation pump, a sludge discharge system and a recirculation system for liquid. The filter section comprises a filter tray having V or U shaped cross-sections and a loosely fitted recovable filter mat of a chemically resistant material, preferably a polyester coating glass fibre material or polypropylene, with optimum surface. The collected sludge is discharged at intervals through the bottom of the tank unit, the unit cleaning liquid is recirculated continuously after filtration and added with fresh cleaning liquid. The apparatus is equipped with a double-acting suction system for vapours from the cleaning liquid and involves substantial advantages to the working environment.
