Abstract: Three embodiments of a single-step lancet are disclosed. Each such lancet embodiment provides true one-step operation. In a single operational step requiring only a unidirectional displacement of an actuator into a housing, a lancet blade is removed from an aseptic environment which protects and retains the lancet blade in a pre-sterilized state within the housing prior to use, stores energy in an energy storage medium, activates the lancet blade to perform a lance and for safety retracts the lancet blade into the housing.

Abstract: A sample of a body fluid such as blood or interstitial fluid is obtained from a body by lancing a portion of a user's skin, preferably in an area other than a finger tip, to form an incision. After the needle has been removed from the incision, a force is applied to depress the skin in a manner forming a ring of depressed body tissue in surrounding relationship to the incision, causing the incision to bulge and the sides of the incision to open, whereby body fluid is forced out through the opening of the incision. A stimulator member is mounted to an end of a lancet-carrying housing for applying the force. The stimulator member can be movable relative to the housing, and can be either heated or vibrated to promote movement of the body fluid.

Abstract: A vacuum assisted lancing device (10) for obtaining capillary blood from body sites includes a plunger (12) mounted in a barrel or upper housing (24) that upon being pressed by a user, drives a lancet (18) to puncture skin at a body site. A vacuum member such as a diaphragm (38, 66) or bellows (66) is displaced by the plunger (12) and displaces air in the lancing device (10) to create a vacuum. The vacuum draws skin partially into the lancing device (10) causing blood to form at the puncture. The vacuum is then released and the blood is tested.

Abstract: A lancet assembly for pricking a person's skin for the purpose of causing a drop of blood to seep out, which can be collected and analyzed. The lance assembly comprises a housing and spring means carrying a lancet blade in the housing. The spring means has a non-linear characteristics, so that when the spring means is released from a compressed state a first spring constant is effective during an initial expansion of the spring means up to a predetermined limit of expansion, and a second spring constant smaller than the first spring constant is effective during a further expansion of the spring means beyond the predetermined limit of expansion.

Abstract: A spring lancet holder for creating accurate standardized, reproducible puncture wounds in the skin for medical diagnostic purposes is disclosed in which accuracy and reproducibility is improved by minimizing the recoil transmitted to the lancet holder by actuation of the drive mechanism which pushes the lancet into the skin. In a preferred embodiment, a mass is shown which is caused to move in opposition to the motion of the lancet caused by a striker spring which is mounted between the lancet and the mass.

Abstract: The lancet device includes a housing and a lancet having a puncturing element. The lancet is disposed within the housing and is adapted for axial movement between an initial or pre-actuated position wherein the puncturing element is retained within the housing, and a puncturing position wherein the puncturing element extends through a forward opening in the housing. The lancet device includes a drive spring disposed within the housing for biasing the lancet toward the puncturing position, and a retraction or return spring for returning the lancet to a position within the housing where the puncturing element is disposed within the housing. The retraction spring thereafter maintains engagement with the lancet to assist in preventing the puncturing element from again projecting outward from the forward opening in the housing.

Abstract: An arrangement for producing a sample of body fluid from a wound opening created in a skin surface at a sampling site includes at least one skin-penetration member having a first end configured to pierce the surface of the skin, and a inner lumen in communication with the first end; at least one actuator operatively associated with the at least one skin-penetration member; and at least one catalyst device configured to cause perfusion of body fluid at the sampling site; wherein the at least one actuator is configured to locate the at least one skin-penetration member so as to obstruct the wound opening while transporting body fluid through the inner lumen. Abstract: A lancet device generally includes a housing having opposing lateral sides extending between a forward end and a rearward end, and a shield coaxially and movably associated with the housing. The housing includes a plurality of longitudinal ribs extending along a portion of at least one of the opposing lateral sides. The plurality of longitudinal ribs form a finger grip on at least one of, and typically both of the opposing lateral sides. The shield is generally movable from a first position in which the shield extends outwardly from the forward end of the housing to a second position in which the shield is at least partially moved within the housing, based on axial pressure applied by the user against the finger grip formed by the longitudinal ribs.
