摘要: A method for blindly determining a channel impulse response (CIR) for a channel in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications system includes constructing a matrix from two received signals. A singular value decomposition is performed on the matrix, which produces left and right singular matrixes. The right singular vector corresponding to the smallest singular value of the matrix is found, which yields the channel impulse response multiplied by an unknown scalar constant. The unknown scalar constant is then removed used known techniques. The method is data efficient, independent of the input symbol constellation, computationally efficient, and superior in performance compared with prior art blind algorithms.

摘要: Platform-independent collaboration backbone and framework for forming virtual communities having virtual rooms with collaborative sessions. Demon logic is embedded in a room page as downloadable platform-independent instructions. The demon, when downloaded, is caused to be in communication with control logic and an application, which, for example, may itself be downloadable. The downloaded demon is also in communication with a server. The server is in communication with similarly-arranged, though not necessarily identical, clients, which for example may have the downloaded demon but a different arrangement of applications. The application at a first and second client node may collaborate by causing their respective demons to send messages from a predefined protocol to the server, which in turn will forward them to other relevant demons. Some of the messages are control messages which facilitate certain collaborative actions, such as joining a session or entering a room. Other messages carry meaning only to the applications. The collaborating applications need not be identical, and the system provides minimal constraints on developers. For example, there is no requirement that the applications operate off an identical data model. Rooms may be organized into communities, which for example may specify certain commonality among rooms, such as common user-authentication. When a user changes from one room to another, if the new room is in a different community, the user will need to go through user authentication-procedures of the new community to permit access.

摘要: Techniques for generating sophisticated representations of the contents of both queries and documents in a retrieval system by using natural language processing (NLP) techniques to represent, index, and retrieve texts at the multiple levels (e.g., the morphological, lexical, syntactic, semantic, discourse, and pragmatic levels) at which humans construe meaning in writing. The user enters a query and the system processes the query to generate an alternative representation, which includes conceptual-level abstraction and representations based on complex nominals (CNs), proper nouns (PNs), single terms, text structure, and logical make-up of the query, including mandatory terms. After processing the query, the system displays query information to the user, indicating the system's interpretation and representation of the content of the query. The user is then given an opportunity to provide input, in response to which the system modifies the alternative representation of the query. Once the user has provided desired input, the possibly modified representation of the query is matched to the relevant document database, and measures of relevance generated for the documents. A set of documents is presented to the user, who is given an opportunity to select some or all of the documents, typically on the basis of such documents being of particular relevance. The user then initiates the generation of a query representation based on the alternative representations of the selected document(s).

摘要: An ear muffler device suitable for coupling to the entrance of the ear canal of a person to reduce the level of ambient noise in the ear canal. The device includes a muffler tube of appropriate dimensions sufficient to isolate the ear canal from ambient air and having an inner cross-sectional area of at least approximately 1.15 cm.sup.2 so as to substantially reduce the acoustic impedance at the entrance of the ear canal over a wide range of audible sound frequencies. A connecting tube for attachment to the ear canal is coupled to the ear muffler tube. Resilient sealing means adapted to seal the connecting tube to the ear canal are attached to the open end of the connecting tube. The device further includes means for securing it in the ear. A sound source isolated from ambient air may be attached near the end of the muffler tube.

摘要: A data storage process which includes an erasable high speed, high density, storage medium having a transition metal oxide layer where said oxide layer is capable of undergoing an optically readable chemical change when simultaneously exposed to heat and to light of a selected wavelength. An optically readable image is formed in selected regions of the oxide layer under ambient conditions which include O.sub.2 by simultaneously exposing said layer to heat and to radiation in the blue-green or shorter wavelength spectrum. The image is erased by heating the entire medium using a furnace or by heating selected portions with IR radiation.

摘要: A method of making a microporous carbon material which includes providing a precursor selected from the group consisting of crystalline salts of aromatic sulfonates and nonporous polymeric salts. Heat treatment of such precursors in the temperature range of 350.degree. to 850.degree. C. in an inert oxygen free atmosphere for a sufficient time promotes thermally induced hydrogen abstraction and rearrangement of BSUs which result in the formation of a carbonaceous microporous material having a pore size distribution in the range of about 4-15 .ANG.. The structural and storage characteristics of the microporous carbon materials are also disclosed.

摘要: A highly microporous adsorbent material is formed as a composite of a natural or synthetic clay or clay-like mineral matrix intercalated with an active carbon. The mineral is prepared and selected to have a selected interlayer spacing between microcrystalline sheets. An organic polymeric precursor is contacted therewith to fill the matrix interstices. Then the precursor is polymerized and carbonized to yield the adsorbent material in which the carbon is intercalated into the mineral matrix. The mineral can be naturally occurring smectite or synthetic hydrotalcite.
