Best results are achieved when the mandrel (22) has the same number of teeth (40) as the number of teeth (64) of the drive gear (60) and with the mandrel and drive gear teeth aligned with each other.

An improved machine for forming a plurality of thin, spiral grooves in the inner surface of a metal pipe. A grooving plug is inserted and held in the metal pipe in such a manner that its axial position is constant and the metal pipe, while being moved longitudinally, is pressed by a plurality of balls which rotate planetarily around the outer surface of the metal pipe at a position corresponding to the position of the grooving plug to continuously form a plurality of spiral grooves in the inner surface of the metal pipe. Thereafter, the metal pipe is finished through a die. The machine manufactures at a high rate metal pipe which has a smooth outer surface and a grooved inner surface.

A method of making a thread-forming screw of arcuate polygonal cross-section from a blank of circular cross-section comprises rolling the blank between thread-rolling dies having a series of spaced apart grooves that are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the blank. The grooves define obtuse angles large enough to permit the blank to roll into and out of the grooves during the thread-forming. The thread thus formed presents a root crosssection formed by an odd number of intersecting circular arcs and a crest cross-section of a like number of circular arcs and respectively concentric with the root cross-section arcs. The arcs at the crest are joined by smaller thread-swaging arcs or lobes that are of a radius substantially equal to depth of the thread.

An hydraulically powered piston moves two curved dies toward each other to crimp a flow conductor positioned between the dies. Travel of the piston is limited to prevent complete crimping of the conductor and the structure holding the two dies for relative movement with respect to each other may be disassembled and reassembled for positioning about an axially extending flow conductor. The external curvature of the die surfaces is not substantially greater than the external curvature of the flow conductor to minimize cracking in the conductor as it is crimped. Locking means may be included in the crimping device to prevent the dies from separating from each other after the flow conductor has been crimped.

A method of thermomagnetically processing a material includes disposing a workpiece within a bore of a magnet; exposing the workpiece to a magnetic field of at least about 1 Tesla generated by the magnet; and, while exposing the workpiece to the magnetic field, applying heat energy to the workpiece at a plurality of frequencies to achieve spatially-controlled heating of the workpiece. An apparatus for thermomagnetically processing a material comprises: a high field strength magnet having a bore extending therethrough for insertion of a workpiece therein; and an energy source disposed adjacent to an entrance to the bore. The energy source is an emitter of variable frequency heat energy, and the bore comprises a waveguide for propagation of the variable frequency heat energy from the energy source to the workpiece.
