摘要:
Components for the manufacture of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are provided, as well as apparatus and automatable methods for their manufacture by rotary die cutting and by lamination of various layers to form membrane electrode assemblies. A method and apparatus for performing the method are provided comprising die-cutting webs of catalyst decal materials or electrode materials to make first and second workpieces at first and second rotary die stations; holding the die-cut workpieces by action of sub-ambient air pressure to an endless perforated belt of first and second vacuum conveyors, typically before they are fully cut from the first and second webs; transporting first and second workpieces to opposing sides of a membrane in a laminating station; concurrently feeding the first and second workpieces into the laminating nip adjacent to the membrane, and laminating the first and second workpieces to the membrane.

The present invention relates to a substrate-supported process for continuous and automated manufacturing of microfibrous fuel cells and other electrochemical cells. Specifically, a removable substrate layer is formed around an inner current collector, followed by sequentially coating multiple structure layers, such as the inner catalyst layer, the membrane separator, and the outer catalyst layer, over such removable substrate layer, and subsequent removing such removable substrate layer, so as to form a lumen around the inner current collector, to allow passage of fluid therethrough. The removable substrate layer preferably comprises a water-soluble polymer, such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), or polyethylene glycol (PEG).

A membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell, a method of preparing the same, and a fuel cell using the membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell. The membrane electrode assembly includes an anode comprising an anode substrate, an anode diffusion layer, and an anode catalyst layer having pores; a cathode comprising a cathode substrate, a cathode diffusion layer, and a cathode catalyst layer having pores; and an electrolyte membrane interposed between the cathode and the anode, wherein the anode diffusion layer is hydrophilic and the cathode diffusion layer is hydrophobic, and the average diameter of the pores of the anode catalyst layer is smaller than the average diameter of the pores of the cathode catalyst layer. In the membrane electrode assembly, air can be easily supplied to the cathode and water can easily flow out of the cathode, thereby obtaining high performance of the membrane electrode assembly, and the anode catalyst layer has relatively small pores, thereby improving durability of the anode and reducing the diffusion speed of methanol in the anode catalyst layer to maintain the initial performance of a battery for a long time.
摘要:
A catalyst coated electrolyte membrane including an anode catalyst layer and a cathode catalyst layer at opposite sides thereof, respectively, wherein micro cracks of the anode catalyst layer or cathode catalyst layer occupy 0.01-1 area % of the total area of the respective anode catalyst layer or cathode catalyst layer, a fuel cell including the same, and a method of preparing the catalyst coated electrolyte membrane. In the catalyst coated electrolyte membrane, micro cracks of the cathode catalyst layer or the anode catalyst layer can be minimized and thus the resistance between the electrode catalyst layer and an electrolyte membrane can be minimized, and crossover of a fuel, such as methanol, ethanol, other alcohols, methane, etc., to a cathode electrode can be minimized, and thus the catalyst coated electrolyte membrane has improved performance and durability.

A cathode catalyst for a fuel cell that includes Ru, M, and Te, wherein M is Mo, W, or an alloy thereof. The cathode catalyst can inhibit catalyst poisoning by oxygen and improve catalyst activity.

A composition, method and apparatus for ink jet deposition of structures are described. Structures which may be deposited have many advantages as a result of their small scale. This is believed to be a result of the sub-micron sized loading used in the composition. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SPFCs) are a particular structure which may advantageously be deposited.

A method of making a fuel cell includes the following steps. A pattern is placed on a base surface to create a predetermined topography on the base surface. An anode layer, a cathode layer and/or an electrolyte layer is/are deposited over the pattern. Areas of higher topography are removed from areas of lower topography using chemical mechanical planarization to form a predetermined fuel cell structure.
