    Abstract: A system and method is provided for identifying the source of an unauthorized copy of content. The method includes embedding a unique user fingerprint code to into each of a plurality of authorized copies of content and identifying an unknown fingerprint code in an unauthorized copy of the content. Each member of the unknown fingerprint code is compared to each corresponding member in each of the user fingerprint codes. A score is assigned to each of the user fingerprint codes based on the comparison and users associated with scores exceeding a threshold are identified as a source of the unauthorized copy.

    Abstract: A system for watermarking and distributing material includes a data processing apparatus, which operates as a watermark encoder. The data processing apparatus is operable to process an original material item to form a reduced-bandwidth-version of the material item, marked with a code word from a predetermined set of code words. The data processing apparatus is operable to form an impaired version of the material item from which a marked representation of the original material item can be formed. The impaired version is formed by subtracting the reduced-bandwidth-version of the material item from a copy of the original material item. As such, the impaired version can be mass distributed, but a representation of the original material item cannot be formed without the reduced-bandwidth-version of the material item. By watermarking the reduced-bandwidth-versions, a representation of the material item, formed by combining one of the marked reduced-bandwidth-versions with the impaired material item, can be uniquely identified. However, only a low bandwidth part of the material item need be watermark encoded, which is more easily distributable to individual recipients than watermarked copies of the original material item.

    Abstract: To identify participants in collusion directed to altering a digital fingerprint embedded in multimedia content, an ECC based fingerprinting technique establishes a code symbol for each of a plurality of segments of digital data forming the multimedia content. The code symbols are concatenated to form a fingerprint signal, which is subdivided into a plurality of subsegments for each segment in the digital data. The subsegments are permuted and embedded into the digital data. When a suspicious copy of the multimedia content is discovered, the permuted fingerprint signal is extracted from the content and inversely permuted to form a test fingerprint. The identity of one of the colluders is determined by correlation with characteristics of the codeword originally assigned to the user. The determination of identity may be enhanced by the addition of group data embedded as an additional fingerprint in the digital data. Joint consideration of coding and embedding provide benefits over previous fingerprinting techniques.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for preventing illegitimate distribution of digital contents on Internet obtains a first wavelet image having a user information-embedding region by performing a wavelet transformation (WT). The user information embedding region of the first wavelet image is wavelet-transformed to obtain a second wavelet image composed of a discrete cosine (DC) region and high-frequency regions second wavelet image. A high-frequency components removed image is obtained by removing high-frequency components in the high-frequency regions of the second wavelet image, and subjected to an inverse WT (IWT) to be outputted as an IWT image. A user information embedding unit embeds user information to the IWT image, wherein data of the user information are sequentially embedded to positions where a difference value between the user information embedding region and the new user information embedding region is small, to thereby reset the user information embedding region as the user information.

    Abstract: The present invention leverages a series of media watermark locations to provide information relating to media ownership and/or distribution source. This provides a forensic means to establish a source of media with a high degree of certainty despite malicious and/or non-malicious attacks. By providing embedded user unique identification, a source of copied media can be determined without the embedded information substantially interfering with the intended purpose of the media itself. In one instance of the present invention, digital media is transformed into an N-dimensional media signal. User unique keys are then utilized along with a master key to determine locations for embedding a watermark signal that possesses substantially similar quantized statistics as the transformed media signal. The watermark signal is then embedded into the media signal, fingerprinting the media.
