Abstract: Methods for reducing the glycation of nutrient and endogenous proteins and methods for reducing the peroxidation of nutrient and endogenous lipids are provided herein. Several inhibitors and conditions of inhibiting glycation of nutrient and endogenous proteins and peroxidation of nutrient and endogenous lipids are also provided herein. Also provided are the methods for inhibiting and treating the conditions associated with the formation of glycated proteins, such as Alzheimer's disease, neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy and the methods for inhibiting and treating the conditions associated with the formation of peroxidized lipids, such as cancer and atherosclerosis.

Abstract: Described herein relates to methods and compositions for extracting hirudin from a plurality of leeches in vivo. The method may include contacting leeches with inducing membranes containing an inducing agent for a first predetermined time period. The inducing membranes may be removed from the leeches, and the leeches may be contacted with a regurgitation agent for a second predetermined time period in a container such that the leeches are induced to regurgitate regurgitation contents. The regurgitation contents may be collected and purified to obtain the hirudin.

Abstract: Hypersulfated disaccharides with utility in asthma or asthma related disorders are disclosed. The compounds are formulated with agents that enhance the oral delivery of the hypersulfated disaccharides. The delivery agents are selected from the group consisting of natural or synthetic polymers having ionic side chains as well as other compounds or types of compounds that improve the bioavailability of the disaccharides relative to delivery of the drug without such agents. The hypersulfated disaccharides are made from heparin or salts thereof.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods for maintaining electrolyte balance and hydration in a person habituated to strenuous physical exertion by assaying perspiration generated by the person under conditions of strenuous physical exertion to determine the volume of perspiration as a function of duration of exertion and the sodium content of the person's perspiration during strenuous physical exertion The person is assigned to one of a plurality of groups of individuals, each group differing in the amount of sodium present in the perspiration and having a unique rehydration solution. The invention also provides for a set rehydration compositions, each member of the set comprising sodium and chloride differing from the weight percentage of sodium in the other members of the set and each member of the set being perceptually labeled to distinguish that member from the other members of the set by one of the human senses.

Abstract: The invention relates to extracts produced from sugar cane processing stream products having desirable properties and health benefits. More particularly the invention relates to sugar cane derived extracts obtained from molasses, methods of producing the extracts, and uses of the extracts for management of insulin resistant conditions or subjects predisposed to such conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. The sugar cane derived extracts of the invention are enriched in polyphenols and the administration of the sugar cane derived extract regulates postprandial glucose response and insulin response and lowering those responses, to avoid the subject becoming hypoglycaemic.
