Abstract: Described is an inflatable multilayer bolster for a vehicle passenger compartment including a hollow body with back and front walls, an air chamber formed between them, and an inflator for injecting pressurized fluid to inflate the hollow body. Preferably, both the front and back walls have an inner layer made of a structural deformable material and an outer surfacing layer co-extruded with the inner layer. Also described is a method of manufacturing the multilayer bolster by co-extruding first and second polymers through a die to produce a parison, and then blow-molding the parison to form the hollow body. Thus the front wall and preferably the back wall as well have an inner layer made of the first polymer in a structural deformable condition and an outer surfacing layer made of the second polymer. This co-extruded multilayer constructed bolster allows efficient manufacturing, structural, inflation and aesthetic characteristics.

Abstract: A rocker panel assembly for attachment to a vehicle, comprising a rocker panel body, a first end feature situated on a first end of the rocker panel body, and a second end feature situated on a second end of the rocker panel body. Abstract: An active bolster for a vehicle is provided, wherein the bolster comprises an expansible hollow interior that is inflatable and is self-supporting in both an inflated and in an uninflated position. The bolster has an inflator module for inflating the expansible hollow interior. The bolster has an inner wall for projecting inwardly into the vehicle and away from the side of the vehicle on inflation of the expansible hollow interior. The bolster may have a relatively non-expansible component located between a first expansible chamber and a second expansible chamber. The bolster may comprise an outer wall having an attachment portion for attaching the outer wall to a portion of the side of the vehicle.

Abstract: An instrument panel subassembly for use in an instrument panel assembly in a motor vehicle is provided. The subassembly includes first and second generally C-shaped energy absorption brackets. The brackets have an aft facing C-section and upper and lower mounting ends. The brackets include attachment means for attaching the brackets to a vehicle structural member. The subassembly further includes a glove box door having an aft surface and a forward surface, and a bin. The glove box door includes hinge means for providing hinged movement of the glove box door relative to the first and second brackets between open and closed positions. Abstract: An air conditioning duct for use in confined spaces such as the instrument panel of an automobile. To eliminate dripping from condensation formed from warm ambient air, the duct is coated with a superabsorbent material which absorbs condensation and promotes evaporation thereby retarding dripping from the conduit for an extended period of several hours. The superabsorbent material may be adhered to the duct by an adhesive or molded in situ in a blow molding process.

Abstract: A fan shroud for use with a cooling fan adjacent to the radiator for a water cooled internal combustion engine includes a generally central opening for directing flow of air to or from a radiator. The fan shroud includes at least one integral chamber for storage of other liquids typically used with a vehicle which may be under pressure. To facilitate handling pressure, the storage chamber includes a plurality of individual storage modules which are interconnected by a plurality of fluid flow channels so that the total storage capacity of the chamber is the sum of the storage capacity of the modules and interconnecting fluid flow channels. The modules and channels are made by bringing the front and back walls of a blow molded fan shroud into contact with each other to define there between channels and modules. Advantageously, the shroud comprises several such chambers and may be used to house engine coolant, power steering fluid or other fluids. In addition, the fan shroud can include chambers for storing fluids which are not necessarily under pressure such as windshield washer fluid and the like.
