Abstract: A blow molding mold has first and second fixtures. The first fixture includes drive means, typically in the form of pins, while the second mold fixture has drive receiving means, typically in the form of holes. When the second mold fixture is in registration with the first mold fixture, the drive means are extended to lock and locate the two fixtures together to enable blow molding without a blow molding press. The method of blow molding uses a robotic arm to move a lightweight second mold fixture to accept a parison as it is extruded. After extrusion the arm moves the second fixture toward the first fixture so that the fixtures can be located and locked together. A single robot using a single extrusion head can serve several mold stations depending upon cycle times.

Abstract: An air conditioning duct for use in confined spaces such as the instrument panel of an automobile. To eliminate dripping from condensation formed from warm ambient air, the duct is coated with a superabsorbent material which absorbs condensation and promotes evaporation thereby retarding dripping from the conduit for an extended period of several hours. The superabsorbent material may be adhered to the duct by an adhesive or molded in situ in a blow molding process.

Abstract: A fan shroud for use with a cooling fan adjacent to the radiator for a water cooled internal combustion engine includes a generally central opening for directing flow of air to or from a radiator. The fan shroud includes at least one integral chamber for storage of other liquids typically used with a vehicle which may be under pressure. To facilitate handling pressure, the storage chamber includes a plurality of individual storage modules which are interconnected by a plurality of fluid flow channels so that the total storage capacity of the chamber is the sum of the storage capacity of the modules and interconnecting fluid flow channels. The modules and channels are made by bringing the front and back walls of a blow molded fan shroud into contact with each other to define there between channels and modules. Advantageously, the shroud comprises several such chambers and may be used to house engine coolant, power steering fluid or other fluids. In addition, the fan shroud can include chambers for storing fluids which are not necessarily under pressure such as windshield washer fluid and the like.

Abstract: In general, the molding of tubular plastic articles such as automotive inlet manifolds with flanges thereon is a difficult and expensive procedure. A simple solution to the problem is the blow molding of the tubular article in a conventional blow molding apparatus followed by the injection molding of the flange around the tubular article in a conventional injection molding apparatus. In the case of an intake manifold, the outlet ends of the manifold pipes are placed in the injection mold, which is closed to define a cavity around the ends of the pipes, and the flange is then molded onto the pipes. Preferably, the ends of the pipes are heated for the injection molding step to ensure good adhesion between the pipes and the flange.

Abstract: An active bolster for a vehicle is provided, wherein the bolster comprises an expansible hollow interior that is inflatable and is self-supporting in both an inflated and in an uninflated position. The bolster has an inflator module for inflating the expansible hollow interior. The bolster has an inner wall for projecting inwardly into the vehicle and away from the side of the vehicle on inflation of the expansible hollow interior. The bolster may have a relatively non-expansible component located between a first expansible chamber and a second expansible chamber. The bolster may comprise an outer wall having an attachment portion for attaching the outer wall to a portion of the side of the vehicle.

Abstract: A running board assembly for mounting to a vehicle such as a truck includes an extruded running board body and a cover member. Advantageously the extruded running board body is made from an extrudable plastic and the cover member is advantageously made of a material having the desired exterior finish.
