摘要: An aerofoil structure with a hollow cavity is manufactured by diffusion bonding and superplastic forming. Outer panels are formed of a first material; a membrane is formed of a second material. Stop-off material is applied to preselected areas on at least one side of the membrane or of one of the panels so as to prevent diffusion bonding between the panels and the membrane at the preselected areas. The panels and the membrane are arranged in a stack and a diffusion bonding process is performed to bond together the first and second panels and the membrane to form an assembly. A superplastic forming process is performed at a forming temperature to expand the assembly to form the aerofoil structure. The forming temperature is selected so that the second material undergoes superplastic deformation at the forming temperature and the first material does not undergo superplastic deformation at the forming temperature.

摘要: Examples of forming metal composites are described herein. In an example, a metal sheet is formed into a predetermined shape using superplastic thermal forming technique. Further, a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheet is shaped into the predetermined shape by thermal forming. The metal sheet and the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheet are coupled by applying an adhesive between the metal sheet and the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheet, to form a metal composite.

摘要: A method for hydroforming a large surface area, double paneled, hollow auto body part, such as a hood, in which the inner and outer panels are concurrently shape formed and seamed structurally together in the same apparatus. A pair of upper and lower dies crush the edges of a double walled blank together between the dies so as to simultaneously clamp, seal, and form the seam. Then, a special face seal and fluid inlet assembly grips and holds the edges of an inlet hole near the center of the blank to allow the interior to be successfully pressurized and expanded.

摘要: To produce an elongate hollow metal body with a cross-sectional contour varying in the longitudinal direction by the internal high-pressure forming process in an internal high-pressure forming press, a sheet-metal blank composed of two blank parts of identical area is first produced, each part having, apart from additional joining-area parts provided in the region of the longitudinal edges, in the longitudinal direction at least the length of the longitudinal hollow body and in the transverse direction at most half the length of the respective cross-sectional contour. Subsequently, the two blank parts are laid one on top of the other and are joined together, in particular welded, in the region of the joining-area parts. Thereafter, the sheet-metal blank is expanded by introducing a pressure medium between the two blank parts held within a tool consisting of two dies. The tool is so shaped that, when it is closed onto the blank, it produces a curved shape in the blank, with the result that the hollow body produced by expansion is curved and can have a cross-sectional contour which varies along its length.

摘要: A method of bonding and shaping a plurality of pieces of material disposed in a fluid tight container includes providing a housing having components with different coefficients of thermal expansion. The container is positioned between upper and lower sections of the housing. The housing is then enclosed in an autoclave. The fluid in the autoclave and housing is heated with a resulting increase in the fluid pressure in the autoclave and housing. As the temperature and pressure in the housing is increased, the joint between the container and the housing sections is sealed by pressing the upper and lower sections of the housing against the container under the influence of forces resulting from different amounts of of thermal expansion of components of the housing. Thereafter, the fluid pressure in the autoclave is increased. Since the joint between the housing and the container has been sealed, the further increase in fluid pressure is applied to only the upper side of the container. This forces the container downwardly against a forming surface having a configuration corresponding to a desired configuration of the pieces of material.

摘要: The specification and drawings disclose a method and apparatus for forming dish-shaped metal elements through the use of a combined fluid pressure and sheet tensioning process. The disclosed method is particularly intended for forming dish-shaped sheet metal elements having a length substantially greater than their width and includes applying a longitudinal tension to the sheet while permitting the lateral edges to move toward one another substantially unconstrained while the fluid pressure acts to bow the sheet. The disclosed apparatus includes a flexible frame of generally eliptical shape which clamps to the edge of the sheet. The frame is arranged so that as the sheet bows outwardly, the lateral sides of the frame are pulled inwardly driving the ends of the frame apart.
