A system and reusable plastic container for preserving the quality of a range of fruits and vegetables are provided. The container independently maintains modified atmospheres and relative humidity within the range of 1% to 50% carbon dioxide plus 1% to 15% oxygen and relative humidity of 75% RH and 100% RH. For produce highly susceptible to mould, yeast and/or bacterial growth at RH of 75% to 80% will result in optimum quality retention. The container includes a plastic body, plastic lid and a gas permeable film membrane hermetically sealed between the lid and the container. The plastic body and lid can be polyamide (nylon 6, 11, 12, or 66 and blends thereof), polycarbonate, polyethylene, polyethyleneterepthalate, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, and mixtures thereof. The lid can be macro-perforated for a three piece application or micro-perforated for a two piece application. The film membranes can have different oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability rates for specific package volumes and specific produce respirations.

The containers preferably include a gas-permeable membrane comprising (1) a microporous film, and (2) a polymeric coating on the microporous film. Using appropriate containers and appropriate controlled atmospheres around the container, the respiring materials can be stored and/or ripened under controlled conditions. Bananas can be ripened while they are being transported, or in conventional ripening rooms without opening the containers in which they have been transported. The ripe bananas are less dehydrated and remain in a satisfactory ripened state for longer periods of time.

The removable barriers comprise thin plastic film or sheets material sealably integrated with the sandwich bag enclosure. The present invention provides removable barriers for preventing the wetting of bread due to contact with moist or wet foodstuffs, sandwich components stored in a layered relationship one relative to the others, and easily removed barriers for convenient field preparation of fresh sandwiches.

A method for refining and bottling maple syrup for use in making sugar on snow, the method comprising: heating the maple syrup to about 22° F. to about 28° F. about the boiling point of water; bottling the heated maple syrup at a temperature above about 180° F.; and cooling the bottle maple syrup to about room temperature. The disclosed invention also relates to a method for preparing sugar on snow, the method comprising: warming bottled maple syrup to about 140° F.; and pouring the warmed maple syrup on a cold medium. The disclosed invention, in addition, relates to a bottled sugar on snow preparation prepared by the process comprising: heating the maple syrup to about 22° F. to about 28° F. about the boiling point of water; bottling the heated maple syrup at a temperature above about 180° F.; and cooling the bottle maple syrup to about room temperature.
