Abstract: A method and apparatus for quickly forming a PAN is describe herein. During operation, a modulated vibration will be received that identifies that network formation is to take place. All devices detecting the vibration will be paired/associated to form a PAN. In one embodiment of the present invention a first device generates the vibration and the subset of available devices will form a PAN with the first device acting as a master device within the formed PAN. In another embodiment of the present invention, a piece of clothing (e.g., a vest) is equipped with a haptic module (vibrating circuitry) to generate the vibration. All pieces of equipment attached to the piece of clothing will receive the vibration and pair accordingly.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a location determination system that includes acoustic transmitting devices, location tags, and a wireless mesh network, where the wireless mesh network uses battery-powered devices. A location tag receives acoustic signals (e.g., ultrasound signals) from an acoustic transmitting device. Clocks from members of the wireless mesh network are synchronized by observation of clock pairings, each clock pair formed by respective clocks in a transmitting device that transmits a message and a receiving device that receives the message. By analyzing the observed clock pairings, a best fit between the clock pairings may be determined. After selecting a reference clock, an acoustic transmission schedule may be propagated to the respective acoustic transmitting device.

A binary message is encoded into a sequence 1000, 2000 of symbols selected from a group of four or eight symbols, each symbol encoding two or three binary bits with an associated frequency. The human-inaudible acoustic signal may have a variable length, with the length of the signal encoded in a header 1002-1008, 2002-2009. The encoding uses both forward error correction and cyclic redundancy coding to increase the robustness of the transmission. Furthermore, the binary bits encoded by the symbols are selected such that a Hamming distance of a single bit transformation exists between symbols associated with adjacent frequencies, so that a frequency error creates only a single bit error.

A gate validation system may include a barcode reader, a speaker, and a processor configured to perform operations including receiving, using the barcode reader, a first barcode from a portable electronic device indicating a request for passage through a gate. The operations may also include outputting, using the speaker, an audio signal having a predetermined feature. The operations may further include receiving, using the barcode reader, a second barcode from the portable electronic device indicating a detected feature of the audio signal. The operations may further include determining that the detected feature matches the predetermined feature and, in response to determining that the detected feature matches the predetermined feature, facilitating passage of a holder of the portable electronic device through the gate.
