Abstract:
A distance between a radiation source and a detector is first set to a first distance and the number of pulses of a .gamma.-ray is detected. Then, the distance between the radiation source and the detector is set to a second distance different from the first distance and the number of .gamma.-ray pulses is detected. A density .rho. of a sample is finally calculated on the basis of a ratio of the two detection pulse numbers which were detected. The radiation source is set on the surface of the sample or in the sample. The sample detector is set on the sample surface. Fundamentally, one radiation source and two detectors are used. In the case of using one radiation source and one detector, either one of them is moved and the number of pulses is detected twice.
Abstract:
A measuring apparatus for measuring a physical property of a substance using radiation has a source of radiation for irradiating the substance, a radiation detector which is disposed on the opposite side of the substance from the radiation source, a mask for allowing radiaton to enter the radiation detector only along n prescribed pathways, and a signal processing and calculating device for calculating the physical property of the substance based on the radiation which is incident upon the radiation detector. The mask has n different mask patterns each comprising a plurality of pattern elements which allow the passage of radiation and which can be positioned between the substance and the radiation detector in alignment with the radiation pathways.
Abstract:
A miniature, low power consuming, density gage utilizing extremely small artificial and naturally found radioactive sources. The gage employs a unique method of compensating for the gamma attenuation coefficient in different materials such as soils to provide a very simple but accurate and effective moisture gage. A single source emits radiation beams, one through a control sample of the material and at least one beam through a zone of the material where moisture content is to be determined. The apparatus may optionally be employed to control a crop irrigation system to maintain moisture within the comfort zone of the plants growing in the soil. The invention also may be used for measuring moisture content in several discrete zones of the material.
Abstract:
Apparatus is disclosed for providing a visual representation of the absorption or transmission coefficients of the elements of a two dimensional matrix of elements notionally defined in a cross-sectional plane through a body. The representation is in the form of an analogue display comprising superimposed lines of information scanned on the surface of a suitable screen, the brightness of each line being indicative of the absorption suffered by penetrating radiation on traversing a respective path through said plane of the body. The orientation of each scanned line depends on the orientation of the respective path with respect to the body.
Abstract:
An isotopic source emitting highly energetic gamma rays transmitted through attenuating materials to a given point at which energy discriminating detectors are located and an electronic circuit connected to the detectors to establish a continuously calibrated density measurement from which the water content in a snow field is determined.
Abstract:
In the monitoring apparatus disclosed herein, a relatively continuous monitoring of aerosol particle concentration is facilitated by concentrating the aerosol particles by impaction and then, in a structure integrated with the impaction apparatus itself, measuring the mass of the collected aerosol particles by beta radiation absorption.
