A fully hydraulic edging system suitable for use in wide plate mills is disclosed. The need for electro-mechanical screws to effect large movements of the side rollers is avoided by employing a pull-back hydraulic cylinder for this purpose. The main hydraulic cylinders are switched to a non-operational mode during large movements thus avoiding the need for large volumes of hydraulic fluid to be transferred under high pressure.

The invention relates to a method for producing flat products of steel from continuously cast slabs having a large or medium thickness or from thin bars, which are compressed and subsequently run through a blooming train and a finishing train. The invention is characterized in that the flat products are descaled on their strip edges prior to compression. The method is carried out in a rolling train which comprises at least a first compression device (1), a blooming train and a finishing train. The rolling train is characterized in that a first descaling device (2) for descaling the strip edges of the flat products is arranged upstream of the first compression device (1).

In conventional fabrication manufacture the thickness of the steel plates are often determined by the metal section required at the weld joints. The subject apparatus and method overcomes this problem by selectively forming a thickened edge along the edge of a thinner steel plate which can now be limited to the thickness required to withstand the stresses on the fabrication. The thickened edge is produced by forcing a plate supported by a table, by passing the plate through a forming apparatus comprised of a combination of rollers. The forming apparatus and table are automatically controlled to produce a thickened edge of constant shape along a non-linear edge of the plate.

A casting/rolling installation has a continuous casting machine, a light thickness-reduction rolling mill, a width-reduction rolling mill and a thickness-reduction rolling mill which are arranged downstream of the continuous casting machine. The light thickness-reduction rolling mill is driven with a power lower than that normally required for thickness-reduction rolling. The power needed to compensate for the resultant deficiency is supplied to the light thickness-reduction rolling mill by the thickness-reduction rolling mill through the cast strip. As a result, a longitudinal tension is applied to the cast strip as it passes through the width-reduction rolling mill, thereby preventing the cast strip from buckling and being deformed at the width-reduction rolling mill.
