A sheet feed device includes a first sheet cassette having an accommodating portion accommodating a first plurality of sheets and a second sheet cassette, disposed on the first sheet cassette, accommodating a second plurality of sheets. The sheet feed device also includes a sheet feeder configured to selectively feed the first plurality of sheets and the second plurality of sheets toward a sheet feed path, and a sheet separator configured to separate, one by one, the sheets fed by the sheet feeder. Specifically, the second sheet cassette is configured to move above the accommodating portion and with respect to the sheet feeder between a sheet feed position in which the sheet feeder contacts sheets accommodated in the second sheet feed cassette to a non-sheet feed position in which the second sheet feed cassette prevents the sheet feeder from contacting sheets accommodated in the second sheet feed cassette.

A sheet feed device has a tray with holding surface for holding sheets, a feed unit for feeding sheets from the tray, and a separation plate. The separation plate has an inclined surface and two or more separation portions that separate a sheet from the sheets held in the tray. At least one of the separation portions projects a first distance from the inclined surface. The separation plate also has a projection positioned on the inclined surface that projects a second distance from the inclined surface. The second distance is greater than the first distance. A first of the separation portions is positioned upstream of the particular projection in the sheet feed direction, and a second of the separation portions positioned downstream of the particular projection in the sheet feed direction.

A sheet feeding device includes an inner guide member and an outer guide member that define a sheet feeding path therebetween. The sheet feeding device also includes an engaging member positioned adjacent to one of the inner guide member and the outer guide member, and a receiving portion positioned at the other one of the inner guide member and the outer guide member. The engaging member moves between an engaged position to engage the receiving portion and a disengaged position to disengage from the receiving portion. The inner guide member is selectively connected to the outer guide member via the engaging member and the receiving portion. When the engaging member contacts the sheet in the sheet feeding path, the engaging member is in the disengaged position, and when the engaging member is separated from the sheet in the sheet feeding path, the engaging member is in the engaged position.

A sheet conveying device includes a tray having a bottom surface. The tray holds at least one sheet therein, and has a recess formed in the bottom surface. A rotating member moves between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the rotating member contacts a sheet held in the tray, and in the second position, the rotating member is separated from the tray. The rotating member selectively rotates to convey a sheet held in the tray in a when the rotating member is in the first position. An operative portion moves in and out of the recess in the bottom surface of the tray, and movement of the operative portion corresponds to a movement of the rotating member into the second position.

The second tray is disposed above the first tray, and receives the first or second size sheet having been moved back from the image processor portion. The second tray has (b-i) a rear guide to be in contact with a rear end of the accommodated second size sheet and (ii) a pair of side guides to be in contact with respective side ends of the accommodated second size sheet. The side guides have respective upper ends at which the first or second size sheet having been moved back from the image processor portion is received. At least one of the side guides has a height that is not smaller than a height of the rear guide. Also disclosed is an image forming apparatus including the sheet tray device.

A sheet guide apparatus including a sheet tray in which a sheet is placed and a side guide having an abutting portion that abuts the sheet placed in the sheet tray. The sheet tray includes a groove formed along a direction perpendicular to an abutting surface of the abutting portion against the sheet. The side guide includes a sliding portion having slidable portions slidable on side walls of the groove, and is capable of moving along a groove direction when the sliding portion is slid on the side walls. The groove includes at least one first groove area and at least one second groove area. The second groove area has a groove width smaller than a groove width of the first groove area and allows the slidable portions of the sliding portion to be slid in the second groove area.
