Abstract:
A method for detecting a data sequence includes generating a first sample stream, which is a time-sequenced digital signal associated with samples of an analog signal. The first sample stream is interpolated to generate a second sample stream with a different phase. The first sample stream is equalized to generate a first equalized sample stream. The second sample stream is equalized to generate a second equalized sample stream. The first and second equalized sample streams are processed to estimate the second equalized sample stream. The first equalized sample stream is filtered to generate a first set of noise sample streams. The estimated second equalized sample stream is filtered to generate a second set of noise sample streams. The first set and the second set of noise sample streams are diversity combined to generate a set of combined noise sample streams. A data sequence is detected using the combined noise sample streams.
Abstract:
Systems and method relating generally to data processing, and more particularly to systems and methods for utilizing multiple data streams for data recovery from a storage device. As an example, a data processing system is discussed that includes a first read head and a second read head each operable to sense information on a storage medium. A synthesizer circuit is operable to determine a quality metric based upon a signal to noise ratio of a first preamble pattern compared with a signal to noise ratio of a second preamble pattern. A balancing circuit is operable to generate a composite output as a combination of a first data set derived from the first read head a second data set derived from the second read head based at least in part on the quality metric.

A servo system includes an equalizer circuit operable to filter digital servo data samples according to filter tap coefficients to yield equalized data, a detector circuit operable to apply a data detection algorithm to the equalized data to yield hard decisions, a convolution circuit operable to yield ideal digital data based on the hard decisions and on target values, a subtraction circuit operable to subtract the ideal digital data from the equalized data to yield an adaptation error signal, an error gradient calculator operable calculate an error gradient signal based at least in part on the adaptation error signal, and a tap adaptation circuit operable to calculate values of the filter tap coefficients based on the error gradient signal.
Abstract:
A data processing system includes a binary data detector having a hard decision output, a reliability calculator operable to calculate an error pattern reliability metric for each of a number of dominant error patterns associated with the hard decision output, and a converter operable to convert the error pattern reliability metrics to multi-level soft information.

Abstract:
A hard disk drive uses a second, reference burst field in a preamble to estimate burst phase and burst magnitude. Such estimations are used for position error signal integration and repeatable runout correction. Gain error is also derived from such estimations. Information contained in a preamble field is used in conjunction with the reference burst phase estimation to synchronize servo address marks.
Abstract:
A hard disk drive includes a processor to automatically adjust a threshold level for finding sync-marks. The processor determines all possible sync-mark patterns for a particular pattern length and analyzes each pattern with reference to real world data. The pattern with the largest distance gap is used. The threshold level is then adjusted dynamically to produce the lowest possible failure rate for the given pattern.
