Abstract:
A method for enhancing read performance in a multi-reader two-dimensional magnetic recording system comprising first and second readers includes: receiving first and second analog read signals from the first and second readers, respectively; sampling the first and second analog read signals to generate first and second sampled signals, respectively, each of the first and second sampled signals comprising an integer component, indicative of a value of a corresponding one of the first and second analog read signals, respectively, at an integer multiple of a corresponding sampling period associated therewith, and/or a fractional component, indicative of a value of the corresponding one of the first and second analog read signals, respectively, at an arbitrary point in time between integer multiples of the corresponding sampling period; and combining the integer and/or fractional components of the respective first and second sampled signals to thereby generate a reader offset estimation signal.
Abstract:
A data processing system includes an analog to digital converter operable to sample an analog signal obtained from a magnetic storage medium to yield digital samples, and a sync mark detector operable to search for a particular one of a number of sync marks in the digital samples. Each of the data tracks on the magnetic storage medium is associated with one of the sync marks. The sync mark on each of the data tracks has a different pattern than the sync marks on neighboring tracks.

Abstract:
Touchdown detection in magnetic storage devices is provided to detect contact between a storage medium and a magnetic head having an embedded contact sensor. A sample stream is obtained, which includes samples of a sensor signal output from the embedded contact sensor. The sample stream is segmented into multiple segments. A modulation depth is determined for each of the segments. A combined modulation depth is determined by combining the modulation depths of the segments using a weighting function. The combined modulation depth is compared with a threshold. A determination is made as to whether the magnetic head makes contact with the storage medium based on a result of the comparing.

Abstract:
Systems, methods, devices and circuits for data amplification, and more particularly systems and methods for characterizing distortion introduced during data amplification. In some cases, an amplifier modeling circuit is discussed that receives a preamplifier status input from a preamplifier circuit; applies a vector fitting algorithm to the preamplifier status to yield a pole value; determines that the pole value is greater than unity; and replaces the pole value with an inverse of the pole value when the pole value is greater than unity.
