    Abstract: Flexible unitary lightguide and a method of making the same are disclosed. The lightguide includes a structured input side that includes a first pattern having smaller features superimposed on a second pattern having larger features. The lightguide further includes a structured top surface that includes a first region and a different second region. The first region includes a plurality of discrete light extractors for extracting light that propagates within the flexible unitary lightguide by total internal reflection. The second region includes a taper portion for directing light from the structured input side to the first region. The light extractors form a periodic array that has a first period along the length of the flexible unitary lightguide. The first period is such that substantially no visible moire fringes occur when the flexible unitary lightguide is used as a backlight in a pixelated display.

    Abstract: An optical assembly includes a light directing film having an average effective transmission of at least 1.3, a light diffusing film having an optical haze of at least 5% and a plurality of spaced apart posts disposed and defining an air gap between the light directing and diffusing films. The posts are attached to a first major surface of the substrate and an opposing second end of each post is attached to the light diffusing film via a first adhesive layer. The first adhesive layer forms a meniscus at each post having an outer surface radius of at least 0.5 micrometers.

    Abstract: Example light management films including a plurality of tapered protrusions are described. In many embodiments, a film includes a reflective polarizer layer and a plurality of tapered protrusions disposed on and tapering away from the reflective polarizer layer. At least one tapered protrusion in the plurality of tapered protrusions has a first lateral cross-section at a first location along a height of the tapered protrusion and a second lateral cross-section at a second location along the height of the tapered protrusion. The first cross-section has a first shape and the second cross-section has a different second shape.

    Abstract: An optical system includes an optical film curved about a first axis and a light control film curved about the first axis. The light control film can be disposed between a light source and the optical film. The optical film includes a microstructured first major surface and an opposing second major surface. The microstructured first major surface defines a linear Fresnel lens including a plurality of Fresnel elements extending longitudinally along the first axis. The first major surface of the optical film faces the light control film. The light control film can include a plurality of alternating optically transmissive and optically absorptive regions extending longitudinally along the first axis such that in a cross-section orthogonal to the first axis, for at least a majority of the optically transmissive regions, a centerline between adjacent optically absorptive regions is substantially normal to a major surface of the light control film.
