Abstract: A medical device and associated methods are disclosed. In one example, the medical device includes a hydrophobic coating. Hydrophobic coatings are shown that include a substrate bonding molecule chain, a hydrophobic molecule bonded to a first end of the substrate bonding molecule chain, and a reactive end bonded to a second end of the substrate bonding molecule chain. In selected examples the substrate bonding molecule chains are bonded to each other in a bond region adjacent to a surface of the component.

Abstract: A sampling device insertable into a bronchoscope to obtain samples of target nodules in lungs of a patient, the system can include a sampling needle, a needle inlet guide tube, and a needle actuator. The sampling needle can extend between a base and a tip. The needle inlet guide tube can be removably couplable to the bronchoscope and can define a working lumen. The needle actuator can be configured to receive the base of the sampling needle to extend the sampling needle through the working lumen. The needle actuator can be engageable with the needle inlet guide tube to move the sampling needle through the sampling device. The sampling device can include operating states. In each of the operating states, the needle actuator can move relative to the needle inlet guide tube to move the tip of the sampling needle with respect to the sampling device.

Abstract: A forceps having an outer tube extending from a proximal portion to a distal portion and defining a longitudinal axis. A reciprocating inner tube can be located within the outer tube and extend along the longitudinal axis. A stationary jaw can be coupled to the distal portion of the outer tube and a moving jaw can be pivotably moveable relative to the stationary jaw. The moving jaw can be engaged with a portion of the reciprocating inner tube such that translation of the reciprocating inner tube pivots the moving jaw relative to the stationary jaw between an open and closed position.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for identifying a target during an endoscopic procedure are disclosed. An endoscopic target identification system includes an endoscope having an endoscopic illumination source, an optical fiber insertable through a working channel of the endoscope and coupled to a non-endoscopic illumination source different from the endoscopic illumination source, and a controller. The controller can send a control signal to the non-endoscopic illumination source to emit a diagnostic beam through the optical fiber when the at least one endoscopic illumination source changes from a first mode to a second mode. The second mode has a lower amount of illumination than the first mode. The controller can determine a composition of a target based on the diagnostic beam incident on the target and light from the diagnostic beam being reflected from the target.

Abstract: An electrosurgical medical device can include a first jaw, a second jaw, a heating element, and a heat sink. The heating element can be heated for cutting or sealing tissue. The heat sink and the heating element can move relative to each other. Such relative movement can be between a first state that dissipates heat from the heating element and a second state that allows the heating element to heat. Such relative movement can be actuated during closing of the jaws. For example, a displacement actuator on the first jaw can push the heat sink away from the heating element when the jaws are being closed, thereby moving the heating element and the heat sink from a first (heat sinking) state to a second (non-heat sinking) state. Heat in the heating element can dissipate through the heat sink in the first state for rapid cooling of the heating element.

Abstract: An example medical instrument for creating tracks within target tissue. Medicants could be injected into these tracks for diffusion into the surrounding tissue. When the second component is at a second position relative to the first component, the second tissue penetrating device is in a track creation configuration. The second tissue penetrating device is slidably received within the first tissue penetrating device.
