A passive needle guard includes a body having proximal and distal ends and a cavity therein for receiving a medicine cartridge, and a shield slidable on the body between retracted and extended positions for exposing and covering, respectively, a needle extending from the body, the shield being biased towards the extended position. Deflectable latch members extend from the shield that include catches for engaging catches on the body for holding the shield in the retracted position. A syringe is inserted into the needle guard, and a needle of the syringe inserted into a patient. A plunger of the syringe is depressed to inject medication and to deflect the latch members to disengage the catches and release the shield, whereupon the shield automatically advances to the extended position. In the extended position, cooperating detents on the shield and body engage one another, thereby preventing subsequent retraction of the shield.

A removal system and method to facilitate removal of a sheath from a medical device such as a hypodermic needle. The removal system comprises a sheath having an exterior housing defining an internal cavity for accommodating a hypodermic needle therein. The sheath is open at one end thereof to facilitate receiving the hypodermic needle therein. An exterior surface of the sheath supports at least one appendage comprising at least one tension leg which interconnects a pushing surface with the sheath. The at least one tension leg partially bows, once a sufficient removal force is applied thereto, facilitating removal of the sheath from a hypodermic needle via a clinician via a one handed technique.

A device and method for delivering and injecting fluid into heart tissue utilizing laterally directed injection ports to increase injectate (fluid) retention in the heart tissue. The catheter includes a shaft having an infusion lumen extending therethrough, wherein the distal end of the shaft includes a penetrating member having one or more injection ports. The penetrating member penetrates the heart tissue in a first direction, and the injection port or ports direct fluid in a second direction different from the first direction. By injecting the fluid or fluid in a direction different than the penetration direction, fluid leakage from the injection site is reduced and a greater volume of tissue is treated for a single primary injection.

A delivery tube for carrying the fluid is attached at a near end to the remote reservoir or vessel. At removed end, the delivery tube has a needle for engagement with the main assembly. The main assembly includes a rotating member that when the rotating is perpendicular to the main assembly, it will accept the handle and needle for emplacement of the body onto a patient. After the handle and needle are removed, the delivery tube can be attached to the rotating member which can then be rotated down to a position along to and adjacent the skin of the patient. This provides for a flush mounted infusion device.

A method of preventing pneumothorax in a patient having a chest tube removed comprises attaching the sheath device to the patient's chest at the time of the chest tube placement, later withdrawing the chest tube into the airtight chamber of the sheath, and sealing the sheath device. Removing the base and flexible joint of the sheath device from the body of the sheath device leaves an air-impermeable dressing on the patient's chest.

A cannula guard receives the cannula and has radially inward projections for engaging portions of the cannula to rotate the cannula guard and cannula relative to the syringe to fix the cannula onto the syringe. The cannula guard is removed by rotating the guard in an opposite direction, causing projections along the inner surface of the cannula guard to ratchet past ribs on the cannula, enabling removal of the cannula guard from the cannula without applying sufficient torque to the cannula to remove the cannula from the syringe.

The patch has a base, a fastening element, and an adhesive layer that attaches to the skin of a medical patient. The coupler attaches to the medical line. By this configuration, the patch and coupler cooperate to retain and releasably secure a medical line to the patient. The device is particularly adapted for use in connection with neonates and provides a small securement surface to fit onto the small body locations of a neonate. The securement device consequently can be used to couple different types of catheters or tubes at different locations on the neonates body.

A disposable double pointed injection needle has a needle hub to which a thin needle cannula is permanently fasten and which needle hub can be mounted on to a syringe comprising a dose setting and injection mechanism and a cartridge containing a liquid medicine to be injected subcutaneously into a human body. The needle hub is provided with a safety shield guided on the outside surface of the needle hub. The safety shield is urged in a direction away from the needle hub by a spring located between the needle hub and the safety shield. The safety shield has a number of protrusions guided in guiding tracks on the outside surface of the needle hub. The guiding tracks are designed such that the safety shield during injection is moved towards the needle hub, and after injection is moved away from the needle hub by the spring and locked in an irreversible position where the safety shield covers the needle cannula and prevents accidental needle stick injuries.

The assembly may be combined with an accessory device (such as a catheter hub, guide wire, etc.) to produce an apparatus that is lockable in a blunted configuration and that can be released by the associated accessory, or may be configured to be released by manual manipulation.
