摘要:
The present invention relates to a blood collection system comprising a blood collection tube, a tube holder, and a self-blunting blood collection needle. A blunting member is deployed upon withdrawal of a blood collection tube from the tube holder, to blunt the needle and so safeguard the patient and the technician from inadvertent needle sticks. The blunting member is retracted to re-sharpen the needle when a subsequent collection tube is inserted into the holder. The mechanism effects blunting and re-sharpening of the needle with requiring that the technician manipulate the mechanism in a manner different from that of conventional, non-blunting blood collection needles. Four types of mechanisms are disclosed: a rack and pinion mechanism; a cylindrical cam mechanism; lever mechanisms and a reversing strap mechanism.

A novel self-blunting needle apparatus (10d) employs a blunting member (70) and a needle (12). The blunting member (70) may be disposed within the needle (12) and may be adapted for fluid flow therethrough. The needle (12) may then be inserted into a patient's tissue and the blunting member (70) may be extended to blunt the apparatus. In other embodiments, e.g., apparatus (10), a driver (76) may be employed to move the blunting member (70) without obstructing fluid flow. There may be a locking spline (58) and cam channel (30) configuration to prevent backward motion of the blunting member (70) in various embodiments. A hollow body (22) is configured to facilitate assembly.

A catheter is provided which deters the backflow of blood between the insertion needle and the catheter cannula by forming the distal end of the catheter hub so as to restrict the inner diameter of the catheter cannula to a wiping fit with the engaged insertion needle. In a first embodiment the distal end of the catheter hub is pre-formed to its desired final inner dimension. The distal end of the hub is stretched to an oversize condition, the catheter cannula is attached to the hub, and the distal end of the catheter hub is heated, causing a stress relief of the previously stretched hub. The distal end of the catheter hub returns to its pre-formed dimension which will mechanically restrict the diameter of the catheter cannula at that point to form the wiping fit with the engaged needle. In a second embodiment the inner diameter of the distal end of the catheter hub is reduced by inserting the distal end of the hub between the opposing faces of a swaging press, which close to compress the hub in one direction. The degree of closure is controlled by the dimension of at least one of a pair of orthogonally opposing swaging press surfaces, which then close to compress the hub in the orthogonal direction. The distal end of the hub is thus swaged to the desired dimension, and the process advantageously produces a finished product without the production of flash material at the intersection points of the swaging surfaces.

A needle assembly includes a needle member (10) and a blunting member (26), the needle member (10) containing a needle cannula (12), the needle cannula (12) having a puncture tip (14) and having a needle passageway therethrough. The blunting member (26) contains a blunting probe (28) having a blunt end (28a). The needle cannula (12) and the blunting probe (28) are disposed telescopically one within the other without obstructing flow through the needle passageway, and are movable between a sharpened configuration in which the puncture tip (14) of the needle cannula (12) is exposed and a blunted configuration in which the blunt end (28a) of the blunting probe (28) extends beyond the puncture tip (14) to blunt the needle assembly. The assembly may be combined with an accessory device (such as a catheter hub, guide wire, etc.) to produce an apparatus that is lockable in a blunted configuration and that can be released by the associated accessory, or may be configured to be released by manual manipulation.

The present invention relates to a self-blunting blood collection needle (55) in which a blunting member (26a) is deployed upon withdrawal of a blood collection tube (56a) from the tube holder (e.g., 136), to blunt the needle (22) and so safeguard the patient and the technician from inadvertent needle sticks. The blunting member (26a) is retracted to re-sharpen the needle (22) when a subsequent collection tube is inserted into the holder (136). The deployment and retraction of the blunting member (26a) is accomplished with a mechanism (142) that is responsive to the insertion and withdrawal of the blood collection tube (56a) to retract and deploy the blunting member (26a) accordingly. One feature of the present invention is that the mechanism (142) effects blunting and re-sharpening of the needle without requiring that the technician manipulate the mechanism in a manner different from that of conventional, non-blunting collection needles. Four mechanisms are disclosed: a rack and pinion mechanism (42); a cylindrical cam mechanism (142); a lever mechanism (242) and a reversing strap mechanism (342).

A disposed system for medical waste, and particularly sharp ended waste, includes a sharps receptacle and a companion needle holder. The needle holder has an actuation mechanism capable of detachably mounting an externally threaded hub of a needle assembly to the holder. The sharps receptacle has a top with an automatic release structure disposed thereon for engagement with the actuation mechanism of the needle holder. The automatic release structure cooperates with the actuation mechanism of the needle holder to automatically detach a mounted needle assembly from the holder into the sharps receptacle in response to placement of the holder into the automatic release structure.

A needle assembly (10) for insertion or removal of fluids has a housing (20) that defines a flash chamber (64) that is radially offset from the longitudinal axis of the needle. An enhanced surface area display member (80) can be installed in an observable location in a needle housing (20) to facilitate observation of the fluid therein.
