A dunnage conversion machine includes a frame, a supply support coupled to the frame for supporting a supply of expandable sheet stock material, and a pair of opposed expansion members rotatably coupled to the frame for rotation about respective axes. The expandable sheet stock material is gripped between the expansion members while it is drawn between the expansion members. Tension provided between a downstream pulling force downstream of the expansion members and the gripping force of the expansion members causes expansion of the expandable sheet stock material. Portions of the expansion members are periodically recessed to provide more uniform expansion of the expandable sheet stock material while reducing or altogether preventing jamming of expanding sheet stock material between the expansion members or tearing of the expanding sheet stock material adjacent the expansion members.

A method for manufacturing a wastepaper shock absorbing material using a vacuum forming principle is provided. The method includes disintegrating wastepaper selected from at least one of old corrugated containers, old newspapers and milk cartons, diluting the disintegrated wastepaper to form a pulp suspension, mixing the pulp suspension with a cationic starch to form a mixture, and vacuuming the mixture by applying a first vacuum in a first direction and a second vacuum in a second direction in a vacuum former to vacuum-dehydrate the mixture and provide a shock absorbing material. The first direction is substantially opposite to the second direction. The method further includes drying the shock absorbing material and performing a surface sizing process on a surface of the shock absorbing material. The wastepaper shock absorbing material has a low elastic modulus and density and can be manufactured without using the conventional press process performed by a press plate.

On the substantial surface area of one paper course (2) has with a pair of shaping rolls (16,17) been embossed a cellular padding structure. The package padding comprises a punch joint region (5) formed with the aid of a pair of punch joint rolls (18,19), and an intact area (7) substantially free of punchings, the package padding being more bulky and fluffy in the region thereof than in the punch joint region (5). In the embossed paper course (2) have by means of the speed differential of the punching rolls (18,19) and the shaping rolls (16,17) been folded pleats (8) so that the package padding contains per unit length of the package padding a greater length of paper material of the second paper course (2) than of paper material of the first paper course (1).

The papers produced may be expeditiously used in dunnage converter machines operable to produce an antistatic (static dissipative) resilient pad-like cushioning dunnage product, for packaging and the like. In one of the processes, liquid antistatic material is applied to a still wet porous paper web produced on a Fourdrinier-type paper making machine, and in predetermined amount for impregnation therein, prior to the completion of the drying of the paper. In another process, a web of dry paper is impregnated with liquid antistatic material, and then the treated web is dried.
