    摘要: In a method for reducing emissions from an asphalt blowing process, an emission reducing additive is added to the asphalt prior to blowing, or early in the blowing process. The emission reducing additive is added in an amount sufficient to reduce the SO.sub.x emissions from the blowing process by at least 25 percent by weight when compared with the same process without the emission reducing additive. The emission reducing additive includes at least two compounds selected from metal hydroxides, metal oxides, metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates, where the metal is selected from sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper and aluminum.

    摘要: A process for significantly decreasing the acid sludge settling time in waste oil recovery processes comprising the steps of heating used oil to a high temperature above 725 degrees Fahrenheit, cooling the heated oil, adding an oxidizing agent to the oil, allowing the acid sludge to settle within a period of approximately 24 to 72 hours, separating the acid-sludge-free oil from the acid sludge which settles out of solution as a result of addition of the oxidizing agent, and adding a polishing agent and separating the re-refined oil from the spent polishing agent. The spent polishing agent is recycled, and the acid sludge which settles out after oxidation is converted to either hard, oxidized asphalt or soft asphalt or asphalt products such as emulsions etc. The process produces a high quality re-refined oil rapidly and economically with no acid sludge disposal problem.

In addition, the invention includes further processing steps (including heat stabilization in either an inert atmosphere or an oxygen-containing atmosphere, deformation, pyrolysis, and/or composite formation) performed after or in conjunction with the oxygenation process. Moreover, the invention includes the composition of matter (in any of a number of different physical forms such as powder, fiber, shaped article, composites) resulting from the practice of this oxygenation process, either alone or in conjunction with the further processing steps. The composition has a homogeneous distribution of oxygen and can be heat stabilized in an inert atmosphere.

    摘要: An improved process for producing an anisotropic pitch product suitable for carbon fiber manufacture. A metal alkylaryl sulfonate is combined with a carbonaceous feedstock substantially free of mesophase pitch, and the combination is heated for a period of time at an elevated temperature while passing a non-oxidative sparging gas such as nitrogen through the feedstock. The process is carried out for a sufficient period of time to produce an anisotropic pitch having from 50 to 100 percent by volume mesophase which is suitable for producing good quality carbon fibers.In one aspect of the invention, an oxidatively reactive gas is used as the sparging gas.

    摘要: A continuous process of producing carbonaceous pitch, including heat-treating an aromatic heavy oil for obtaining a first cracked product, and thermally cracking the first product in a cracking zone by direct contact with a gaseous heat transfer medium to obtain distillable cracked components and a mesophase-containing pitch. A first portion of the liquid phase in the cracking zone, including the mesophase-containing pitch, is separated into a mesophase-rich pitch and a matrix pitch having a low concentration of mesophase. The mesophase-rich pitch is recovered while at least a portion of the matrix pitch is recycled to the cracking zone. The distillable cracked components are withdrawn from the cracking zone and separated into light, middle and heavy fractions. At least a portion of the heavy fraction is heat treated and is recycled to the cracking zone. A least a portion of the middle fraction and/or a portion of the heavy fraction is hydrotreated to obtain a hydrogen-donating oil which is then reacted with a second portion of the liquid phase to hydrogenate the mesophase contained therein, the reaction product being recycled to the cracking zone.
