Abstract: A spatial light modulator having a layer of thermo-optical medium, where the thermo-optical medium is at least partially transparent for at least one spectral component of visible or near infrared light and having the thermal conductivity between 0.01 and 30 W K−1 m−1 at the temperature of 20° C. and the layer having a thickness up to 100 μm is disclosed. At least one heating microsource in thermal contact with the layer of the thermo-optical medium, where each heating microsource has at least one dimension smaller than 10 μm, and at least one substrate in thermal contact with the thermo-optical medium, the substrate having a thermo-optic coefficient at least 10 times smaller than a thermo-optic coefficient of the thermo-optical medium and a thermal conductivity of at least 1 W K−1 m−1 while the thermal conductivity of the substrate is higher than the thermal conductivity of the thermo-optical medium.

Abstract: An optical power limiter, a method of fabricating the optical power limiter, a method of limiting optical power, a method of upper bounding information leakage in quantum cryptography, and a quantum cryptography system. The optical power limiter comprises an optical input port; an optical output port; an effective medium disposed between the input port and the output port; and a diaphragm disposed between the effective medium and the output port; wherein the effective medium has a thermo-optic coefficient such that a light beam entering the effective medium from the direction of the input port experiences a refractive index gradient in a direction perpendicular to a propagation direction in the effective medium as a result of absorption; and wherein the diaphragm is disposed in a path of the light beam for limiting how much of the light beam reaches the output port.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the present disclosure are directed towards an integrated chip including a waveguide and a heater structure. The waveguide is disposed on a substrate and comprises an active region that extends continuously along a first distance. The heater structure overlies the waveguide. The heater structure comprises a conductive structure over the active region and a vertical structure disposed between the conductive structure and the substrate. The vertical structure comprises a conductive upper vertical segment and a lower vertical segment. The conductive structure and the conductive upper vertical segment continuously laterally extend across a second distance that is greater than or equal to the first distance. The first distance is greater than a width of the conductive structure.

Abstract: A variable opacity material is provided that may be in the form of a mixture, such as an emulsion that contains a discontinuous aqueous polymeric solution having an LCST of 0 to 100° C. and a continuous phase containing a hydrophobic polymer, such as a polysiloxane. One or more salts, such as lithium bromide and sodium chloride, may be added to the aqueous solution to lower the LCST of the aqueous solution and to raise the refractive index of the aqueous polymeric solution to substantially match the refractive index of the hydrophobic polymer. The variable opacity materials may be applied in the form of a film to various substrates, such as glass.

Abstract: A sporting towel mat for use on a support surface includes a fabric layer defining a first surface and a second surface, and only one single first anti-slip strip and only one single second anti-slip strip having a predetermined with and being attached on the first surface and the second surface respectively. The first anti-slip strip and the second anti-slip strip covers the first surface and second surface of the fabric towel incompletely so that the first surface and the second surface of the fabric towel has at least one part thereof exposed to form at least one first exposed part and at least one second exposed part respectively. The fabric towel is foldable with said first anti-slip strip and said second anti-slip strip.
