Abstract: A spatial light modulator having a layer of thermo-optical medium, where the thermo-optical medium is at least partially transparent for at least one spectral component of visible or near infrared light and having the thermal conductivity between 0.01 and 30 W K−1 m−1 at the temperature of 20° C. and the layer having a thickness up to 100 μm is disclosed. At least one heating microsource in thermal contact with the layer of the thermo-optical medium, where each heating microsource has at least one dimension smaller than 10 μm, and at least one substrate in thermal contact with the thermo-optical medium, the substrate having a thermo-optic coefficient at least 10 times smaller than a thermo-optic coefficient of the thermo-optical medium and a thermal conductivity of at least 1 W K−1 m−1 while the thermal conductivity of the substrate is higher than the thermal conductivity of the thermo-optical medium.

Abstract: Photonic ring modulators with high tuning efficiency and small footprint can be formed in a hybrid material platform from a silicon bus waveguide vertically coupled to an optically active compound semiconductor (e.g., III-V) ring resonator. The performance of the modulator, e.g., in terms of the tuning efficiency and the maximum insertion loss, may be optimized by suitable levels of an applied bias voltage and a heater power of a heater optionally included in the ring modulator. The disclosed hybrid photonic ring modulators may be used, e.g., in photonic transceiver circuits with high lane count.

Abstract: An optical logic gate decision-making circuit that combines non-linear materials, such as silicon nitride, on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate is described. Circuitry includes a ring cavity coupled to an input optical bus waveguide. The input optical bus waveguide receives an optical signal and passes the optical signal to the ring cavity. An electro-optical device, for instance a PN junction, is integrated within the ring cavity to modulate the optical signal such that an optical logic gate function is enabled. An output optical bus waveguide is also coupled to the ring cavity, which outputs the optical signal modified based on the optical logic gate function and based on a wavelength routing function. By using silicon nitride, the optical non-linearity of the materials enables an “all-optical” logic gate. Thus, the optical logic gate decision-making circuit is suitable for all-optical circuits, and support ultrafast optical signal processing and enabling packet switching of data.

Abstract: A variable opacity material is provided that may be in the form of a mixture, such as an emulsion that contains a discontinuous aqueous polymeric solution having an LCST of 0 to 100° C. and a continuous phase containing a hydrophobic polymer, such as a polysiloxane. One or more salts, such as lithium bromide and sodium chloride, may be added to the aqueous solution to lower the LCST of the aqueous solution and to raise the refractive index of the aqueous polymeric solution to substantially match the refractive index of the hydrophobic polymer. The variable opacity materials may be applied in the form of a film to various substrates, such as glass.
