The second fuel supply system is branched from the first fuel supply system, further pressurizes the fuel, pressurized by the low-pressure pump, by a high-pressure pump that is driven according to an operating state of the internal combustion engine, and supplies the fuel pressurized by the high-pressure pump to a second fuel injection mechanism. The pulsation propagation suppressing unit is provided in at least one of the first fuel supply system and the second fuel supply system, and suppresses propagation of a pulsation generated in the high-pressure pump to the first fuel injection mechanism.

Next, when the crankshaft is rotated forwardly, the residual gas is sucked from the intake passage into the combustion chamber together with air, and burnt in the combustion chamber. The target amount of the reverse rotation is set to generate the backward gas flow from the combustion chamber to the intake passage in all cylinders, or to generate the backward gas flow from the exhaust passage through the combustion chamber to the intake passage in at least one cylinder.

A high-pressure fuel supply system of an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a high-pressure pump driven by the engine and operable with a cycle consisting of an intake stroke and a discharge stroke. The high-pressure pump includes a valve selectively placed in an open position to allow the fuel to be introduced into the pump and in a closed position to allow the fuel to be fed under pressure to a high-pressure portion located downstream of the high-pressure pump. A controller of the fuel supply system generates commands for closing the valve to the high-pressure pump during starting of the engine before the cylinders are discriminated from each other, such that a period of the generated commands is shorter than a half of the cycle of operation of the high-pressure pump during starting of the engine. After starting of the engine, the controller controls a duration of closing of the valve during the discharge stroke of the pump so that a regulated amount of the fuel is fed under pressure to the high-pressure portion.

The fuel reservoir has a side surface and a bottom surface. One part of the side surface imparts one velocity component oriented in the direction of width in the injection hole to the fuel flow along the one part of the side surface. Another part of the side surface imparts another velocity component oriented in the direction of width in the injection hole to the fuel flow along the another part of the side surface. The bottom surface is formed at right angles with the center axis of the injection hole. The injection hole is communicated with the fuel reservoir via the bottom surface thereof.
