Although modern diesel fuel formulations are intended to reduce emissions of diesel engines, at least some of those modern fuels tend to have relatively low lubricity levels. The control valve assemblies described herein help to minimize any increased wear that would otherwise result from the use of such low lubricity fuels by providing a valve element, a valve guide, and an insert. The valve element is received within the valve guide and is moveable between an open position and a closed position. The insert forms a first sealed interface and a second sealed interface with the valve element and the valve guide. When the valve element is in the closed position, both of the first sealed interface and the second sealed interface are engaged. When the valve element is in the open position, only one of the first sealed interface and the second sealed interface is engaged.

A high volume high pressure common rail pump for a fuel system includes pairs of pump head assemblies in phase with each other but oriented in opposition to one another about a rotating cam shaft. Pump pistons in the pump head assemblies simultaneously undergo pumping strokes via a shared two lobe cam of the rotating cam shaft. The pump may include two pairs of pump head assemblies, and each head assembly may include two pump pistons. The cam shaft includes two cams sufficiently out of phase with one another that the cam shaft always has a positive torque even when the cam lobes are symmetrical. In addition, because the pumping is done simultaneously on opposite sides of the cam shaft, the forces on the cam shaft are balanced and its support bearings experience less wear and tear.

A linear control valve is disclosed regulating the flow of fluid to hydraulically activated devices, preferably a fuel injector and an engine compression release brake. The valve includes a valve member that is moveable between a first position in which the fuel injector is, at least partially, activated, a second position in which neither the fuel injector nor the engine compression release brake is activated, and a third position in which the engine compression release brake is activated. An electrical actuator providing two permanent magnets and two oppositely wound solenoid coils moves the valve member between its three positions. The polarity of the permanent magnets are oriented such that when the solenoids are energized, one solenoid coil pulls the valve member while the other solenoid coil pushes the valve member in the same direction.

A fitting is fixed to the valve housing and has a post directed toward fluid flow from the source of pressurized fluid. A check valve assembly slidably translates on the post between a closed position abutting the first seat surface which restricts flow toward the pressure source, and an open position spaced from the first seat surface which permits flow toward the pressure responsive mechanism. The control system comprises a variable-displacement hydraulic pump with a control element adjustable to a range of positions which controls an output of the pump. The control system additionally includes positioning means for positioning the control element responsive to pressure differences between the fluid reference chamber and the output port. Electronic valve means regulates a pressure of hydraulic actuating fluid in the fluid reference chamber. The electronic valve means is electronically connected with the electronic control means to receive the output signal. A change in the output signal to the electrical valve means produces a change in the pressure of the hydraulic actuating fluid in the fluid reference chamber, thereby causing the positioning means to operably position the control element to change the output of the pump.

Common rail fuel injectors typically have difficulty in changing an injection rate during an injection event. Fuel injectors for this common rail fuel injection system include a multi-position admission valve. The admission valve is stoppable at a middle position to inject fuel at a low rate. The lower rate is accomplished by leaking some fuel to drain to reduce injection pressure. The admission valve is also stoppable at a fully open position to inject fuel at a high rate. Fuel injection events are ended, and the fuel injectors maintained between injection events, with the admission valve member in contact with a supply seat to close the high pressure supply passage. This strategy can be used in conjunction with a spring-biased needle valve member to expand fuel injector capabilities.
