Abstract: Systems, apparatus, user equipment (UE), evolved node B(eNB), and methods are described for machine-type communications (MTC) with early termination of repeated transmissions. In MTC implementations with narrow bandwidth, significant numbers of retransmissions may be scheduled based on channel quality measurements. If data is successfully decoded at a receiving device while a significant number of retransmissions remain, system resources are wasted. Embodiments described herein thus use downlink control messaging or intermediate hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) messaging for early termination of repeated messages.

Abstract: A base station for secondary-cell (S-cell) operation in an unlicensed band is subject to listen-before-talk (LBT) rules. The apparatus generates S-cell discovery reference signal (DRS) that includes a primary synchronization signal (PSS) based on a cell ID associated with the base station, a secondary synchronization signal (SSS), a cell-specific reference signal (CRS), and optionally CSI-RS. Solutions are described for generating portions of the DRS to accommodate the placement of the DRS in arbitrary subframes.

Abstract: Devices and methods of reducing blind decoding attempts of user equipment (UE) suing carrier aggregation are generally described. The UE may determine at least one subframe in a modification period to monitor for a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) formed in accordance with a Discontinuous Transmission Downlink Control Information (DTX DCI) format. The DTX DCI format may indicate whether the serving cell is in a DTX or non-DTX state. The UE may determine the DTX state of each serving cell from the DTX DCI format and monitor an enhanced PDCCH of each serving cell in the non-DTX state to provide a scheduling assignment for the UE, without monitoring each serving cell in the DTX state. The UE may receive higher layer signaling that indicates a repetition period and subframe offset for DTX DCI format transmissions or a bitmap of the DTX DCI format transmissions for subframes within each modification period.

Abstract: Sub-band allocation techniques for reduced-bandwidth machine-type communication (MTC) devices are described. In one embodiment, for example, user equipment (UE) may comprise logic, at least a portion of which is in hardware, the logic to identify a machine-type communication (MTC) sub-band allocation based on received MTC sub-band allocation information, the MTC sub-band allocation to comprise an allocation of a plurality of subcarriers to an MTC sub-band of a system bandwidth of a serving cell of the UE, the MTC sub-band allocation to define at least one MTC direct current (DC) subcarrier among the plurality of subcarriers, and a radio interface to receive a transmission via the MTC sub-band according to the MTC sub-band allocation. Abstract: Embodiments of a User Equipment (UE) to operate in accordance with a physical random access channel (PRACH) are disclosed herein. The UE may comprise hardware processing circuitry to determine a coverage enhancement category for the UE based on downlink channel statistics related to reception of downlink signals at the UE from an Evolved Node-B (eNB) and an uplink-downlink imbalance parameter related to uplink reception at the eNB. The hardware processing circuitry may be further to select, for use in a coverage enhancement mode, a PRACH preamble from a set of candidate PRACH preambles based on the determined coverage enhancement category for the UE. In some embodiments, at least some of the candidate PRACH preambles may span a different number of sub-frames.

Abstract: An enhanced NodeB (eNB), user equipment (UE) and communication methods therebetween using an unlicensed channel of an unlicensed band are generally described. The eNB measures an interference power level (IPL) of the unlicensed channel at the eNB and determine a transmit power level (TPL) for a downlink transmission based on the IPL, the TPL decreasing with increasing IPL. Feedback including unlicensed channel conditions measured by the UE is used by the eNB to determine the UE-eNB proximity. The eNB determines whether to transmit the downlink transmission to the UE based on the IPL and the proximity; as the IPL increases, the eNB services increasingly proximate UEs until, when the IPL exceeds a predetermined threshold, the eNB does not service any UE using the unlicensed channel. The eNB schedules and transmits the downlink transmission to the UE using the transmit power level.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for transmitting uplink control information (UCI) over an OFDMA-based uplink. In some embodiments, UCI symbols are mapped to resource elements (REs) in the time/frequency resource grid to maximize frequency diversity. In some embodiments, UCI is mapped in a manner that takes into account channel estimation performance by mapping UCI symbols to those REs that are closest (in terms of OFDM subcarriers/symbols) to REs that carry reference signals.
