Abstract: Enhanced random access procedures for link-budget-limited user equipment (UE) devices are disclosed. A user equipment device may transmit a first message containing a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH). The PRACH contains instances of a Zadoff-Chu sequence, and may be transmitted repeatedly as part of a single random attempt, to facilitate correlation data combining at the base station. The available Zadoff-Chu sequences may be partitioned among a plurality of sets, each set being associated with a respective Doppler shift range (or frequency hop pattern or time repetition pattern). A UE device may signal Doppler shift (or other information) to the base station by selection of one of the sets. The first PRACH transmission and the following PRACH transmission may occur in consecutive subframes. A UE device may select from a special set of Zadoff-Chu sequences (different from a conventional set of sequences), to signal its status as a link-budget-limited device.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to application dependent channel condition assessment mode selection for reduced power consumption in cellular communications. In one embodiment, a channel condition assessment mode may be selected for assessing a wireless communication channel used for a cellular link. The channel condition assessment mode may be selected from at least two channel condition assessment modes, and may be selected at least in part based on application characteristics of an application using the cellular link. Channel condition assessment may be performed according to the selected channel condition assessment mode. Channel condition assessment results obtained from the channel condition assessment may be transmitted to a cellular base station via the cellular link.

Abstract: An auto-detection scheme may be applied to a physical layer (PHY) preamble of a communications packet, such as an 802.11 packet, to identify which generation of a communication standard was used to generate the packet. A packet of a wireless transmission may be received by a wireless device. The packet may include a PHY preamble, including a first field, such as a legacy long training field (L-LTF), and a second, subsequent field, such as a non-legacy Signal field. The wireless device may determine that the first field is encoded using a Fast-Fourier Transform (FFT) of a first size, and that the second field is encoded using a FFT of a second, different size. This determining may identify a generation of the communication standard used to generate the packet. In response to the determining, the wireless device may decode the packet according to the identified generation of the communication standard.

Abstract: For paging user devices that are link budget limited (LBL), a base station transmits a special ID that is used by said devices to identify a paging frame and/or a paging occasion. When transmitting a paging message for an LBL device, the base station may use: (a) larger aggregation and larger CFI (than conventionally allowed) and (b) a larger number of resource blocks (than conventionally allowed) for paging payload. If paging messages for LBL devices saturate the paging frame capacity, the base station may allocate a plurality of special IDs. If paging messages for LBL devices and/or other data transfers saturate network capacity, at least a subset of the LBL devices may be directed to enter a connected-state discontinuous reception (DRX) mode, wherein those devices will remain in connected mode and periodically check for resource allocations. Paging payload information may be repeatedly transmitted in successive subframes, to support soft combining.

Abstract: Wireless communication devices (UEs) may include multiple receive (RX) chains and associated antennas, and at least one transmit (TX) chain co-located with one of the RX chains. The UE may track instant fading of the antenna gain(s) during reception of packets from an associated access point (AP) device to which the UE intends to transmit packets. The UE may also track long term antenna gain(s), using any packets received at the multiple RX chains within the UE. At a switching occasion, a decision is made by the UE whether to switch antennas. If the instant fading detection is based on packets received no later than a specified time period prior to the switching occasion, then the UE may make the switching decision based on the results of the instant fading tracking. Otherwise, the UE may make the switching decision based on the results of the long term antenna gain tracking.

Abstract: A station configured to perform a method for determining a wireless property such as a channel estimate, a channel estimation track, a time tracking loop, and a frequency tracking loop. The method includes determining a set of consecutive subframes in which no transmission is scheduled, placing a processor into a first power mode during at least a portion of the set of consecutive subframes, placing the processor into a second power mode during at least another portion of the set of consecutive subframes, receiving a first reference symbol when the processor is in the second power mode and calculating a wireless property based on the first reference symbol.

Abstract: An interface circuit in a computing device may communicate with user-interface devices using shared slots during time intervals. In particular, the computing device may transmit outgoing messages to the user-interface devices at a first predefined time during sequential time intervals when the user-interface devices transition from a sleep mode to a normal mode. In response, the computing device may receive incoming messages from one or more of the user-interface devices at a second predefined time following the first predefined time during the sequential time intervals. Then, the computing device may transmit a multicast message to the user-interface devices at a third predefined time during the sequential time intervals. In response to the given multicast message, one of the user-interface devices may communicate data to the computing device. Note that, in some instances, a multicast time slot may instead be used to communicate data to one of the user-interface devices.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to low energy communication techniques. According to some embodiments, a wireless transmission may be received by a wireless device. The wireless transmission may include a physical layer (PHY) preamble and PHY data. The PHY preamble may include destination information indicating a destination and length information indicating a length (or duration) of the wireless transmission. The destination and length information may be included prior to a portion of the PHY preamble configured for channel estimation. The wireless device may determine whether the wireless transmission is destined to the wireless device based on the destination information. If the wireless transmission is not destined to the wireless device, the wireless device may drop a remainder of the wireless transmission.
