Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. Wireless communications systems may support uplink random access channel (RACH) transmissions on multiple beams and over multiple component carriers (CCs). A wireless device may transmit a random access preamble to a base station in a first RACH transmission, which may indicate a set of CCs over which the base station may respond with a random access response (RAR) in a second RACH transmission. The second RACH transmission may then include an indication for which CCs the wireless device may use for a subsequent RACH transmission (e.g., a RACH message 3). The wireless device may also indicate a beam index and/or time-frequency resources associated with beams and/or CCs used for such cell acquisition transmissions. In other examples, the base station may indicate resources (e.g., via a handover command or RACH command) for wireless device scheduling request and/or beam-failure recovery request transmission.

Abstract: User equipment (UE) selection of contention-free random access (CFRA) and contention-based random access (CBRA) for handover processing is discussed. The aspects include receiving a random access configuration at the UE including configuration for CFRA and CBRA. The UE will determine a first random access resource, wherein the first random access resource maps to one or more beams from a target base station. The UE may initiate a random access request using the CFRA when the first random access resource is a contention-free resource, and initiate the random access request using the CBRA when the first random access resource is a contention-based resource.

Abstract: A base station may transmit, to a user equipment (UE), an indication of parameters (e.g., thresholds) for radio link monitoring (RLM). The UE may monitor active beam pairs in accordance with the indication. In some cases, the UE may configure or may be configured (e.g., by a base station) to transmit reference signals for triggering an RLM operation based on the monitored beam pairs. After triggering, the base station may perform an RLM operation with the UE. Additionally or alternatively, a base station may configure a UE with a beam monitoring configuration that enables uplink beam monitoring. The configuration may indicate one or more active beam pairs for uplink transmissions from the UE, and the base station may perform an RLM operation on the indicated beam pairs. Based on RLM operations (e.g., joint uplink and downlink beam monitoring), beam pairs may be reestablished or newly established.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. Beams used for synchronization signals may be associated with beams used for reference signals. For example, a base station may identify a first set of millimeter wave (mmW) communication beams to transmit a synchronization signal. The base station may transmit the synchronization signal and identify a second set of mmW communication beams to transmit a reference signal, where the second set of mmW communication beams may be associated with the first set of beams. For instance, the first set and second set of mmW communication beams may be the same or similar. The base station may then transmit the reference signal on the second set of mmW communication beams. A user equipment may in turn identify the first and second sets of beams as being associated, and receive the reference signal on the second set of mmW communication beams.

A network entity may identify a first frequency range of a system bandwidth that is used for transmission of synchronization information. The network may identify a second frequency range of the system bandwidth that is used for transmission of common control information. The second frequency range may be a function of the first frequency range. The first and second frequency ranges may be less than the system bandwidth. In some cases, the second frequency range and the first frequency range may be a same frequency range. The network entity may transmit the common control information on a frequency within the second frequency range of the system bandwidth.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods of beam switching are presented. A beam switch message (BSM) is transmitted to a second device via a first beam set. The BSM includes a command to switch from communication via the first beam set to communication via a second beam set at a switch time. It is determined whether a response message is received from the second device via the first beam set, the response message indicating that the second device received the BSM. A communication is sent to the second device via the second beam set after the switch time when the response message is unreceived.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for assisting a UE in measuring reference signals in a wireless communication system using beams. A BS may transmit, to a UE, information regarding one or more measurement gaps for measuring one or more reference signals. The BS may transmit, to the UE, additional information regarding at least one of direction information associated with the one or more reference signals or rank indication to be used by the UE to measure the one or more reference signals during the one or more measurement gaps. A UE may perform corresponding operations.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described that provide for selecting different uplink transmission parameters for transmission or retransmission of a random access message. A user equipment (UE) may retransmit a random access message to a base station during a random access procedure if an initial transmission of the random access message was unsuccessfully received by the base station. The UE may select a different transmission beam, uplink resource, or transmission power for retransmission of the random access message. The selection may be based on path loss associated with synchronization signals or previous transmissions. The selection may also be based on a maximum number of retransmissions.

Abstract: A wireless communications system may support beamforming to transmit and receive signals. A device operating within the wireless communications system may transmit a request to measure a beamformed reference signal. The device may also transmit a beamforming configuration indicating one or more beamforming options for measuring the beamformed reference signal. The beamforming options may include measuring the beamformed reference signal using a directional configuration and an omni-directional configuration. The device receiving the beamforming configuration may form a receive beam in accordance with the beamforming configuration to measure the beamformed reference signal. A device operating within the wireless communications system may determine to use a particular beamforming option for measuring a beamformed reference signal without first receiving a beamforming configuration, and may make the determination based on signal quality at the device or capabilities of the device.
