The invention relates to a method of interrogating a multiple number of optic sensors. The method comprises the steps of providing a multiple number of optic sensors included in a single optic path and having spectrally separated resonance spectra, and providing a single interrogation unit coupled to the single optic paths. Further, the method comprises the steps of selecting a limited number of interrogation wavelengths for each optic sensor and programming a programmable laser source, included in the single interrogation unit, in a sequence of the selected interrogation wavelengths. In addition, the method comprises the steps of interrogating the optic sensors by operating the laser source in the sequence of the selected interrogation wavelengths, and performing measurements on the programmable laser source output for correcting the interrogating step.

This sensor comprises an optical fiber having at least one removed cladding section as the sensitive region, at least one probing light source that side illuminates the fiber, a power supply, a detector, a signal processor and a display. The sensitive optical fiber is optically affected by the presence of a measurand medium that can fluoresce, phosphoresce, absorb and/or scatter the probing light. This probing light is guided by the fiber core towards a detector which measures the light intensity and this light intensity is correlated with a measurand.

A reference signal is propagated through the fiber optic cable. A beam of light is received from the fiber optic cable, wherein the beam of light includes the propagated reference signal and the signal from the sensor generated from an interaction of the sensor and the reference signal. The propagated reference signal is obtained from the received beam of light. The signal from the sensors is obtained by sampling the received beam of light using the obtained propagated reference signal.

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based sensor is used as a strain sensing element to determine frame foot loading of a generator. Three FBGs may be used in tandem to form a basic Frame Foot Loading Module (FFL Module). Two modules are fixed on each vertical support gusset at the corner of the generator frame, with one module on the front of the gusset and a second module on the back of the gusset. Thus, each gusset may be instrumented with six FBG strain gauges or sensors. The gussets are chosen on each of the four corners of the generator. For two-pole generators the first three gussets at each corner may be used and, for four-pole generators the first four gussets may be used.

Methods and systems used to perform sweep-free stimulated Brillouin scattering-based fiber optical sensing are described. In one aspect, a method includes interrogating different parts of a Brillouin gain spectrum using multiple optical tones in an optical fiber. The interrogating includes sending at least two pump tones into the optical fiber from one end of the optical fiber, such that a frequency spacing between the pump tones is larger than a width of the Brillouin gain spectrum. The interrogating also includes sending at least two probe tones into the optical fiber from another end of the optical fiber, such that a frequency spacing between the probe tones is different from the frequency spacing between the pump tones. The method further includes generating a sensing output based on the interrogating.
