摘要:
A method and system are disclosed for providing call screening in conjunction with a variety of network-based call services. An exemplary method for providing a called party at a called party station with call screening includes: (a) forwarding a call to the called party station (CPS) to a voice mailbox so that a caller can leave a message for the called party; (b) initiating a simplex call to the CPS; and (c) bridging the call forwarded to the voice mailbox and the simplex call to the CPS so that the called party can hear the caller leaving a message for the CPS; (d) initiating a duplex call to the CPS in response to signaling received from the CPS; and (e) bridging the call forwarded to the voice mailbox and the duplex call so that the caller and the called party are in communication with one another. In one embodiment of the present invention, the step of initiating a simplex call includes the step of delivering a distinctive ring to the CPS indicating that the caller is leaving a message for the CPS. In another embodiment of the present invention, the step of initiating a simplex call includes the step of transmitting a call waiting indicator to the CPS. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the step of initiating a simplex call includes the step of transmitting a signal to the CPS indicating that the calling party station will pay for cellular charges associated with the call.

A telephony call-waiting system for clients having a computer with a video display unit (PCNDU) and a public-switched telephony network (PSTN) telephone connected to the PSTN by a single line, keeps a status indication of the client's Internet connection status and, during periods of time the PC/VDU is connected to the Internet, alerts the client by an alert signal over the Internet connection of any waiting PSTN calls. In a preferred embodiment the client's PC/VDU is adapted to provide an audio and/or visual alert event when an alert signal is received, and to provide for a user-initiated response to an alert, accepting or rejecting a call. In the event a call is accepted, provision is made for connecting the accepted call to the client's PC/VDU as an IP call. In some embodiments several calls may be dealt with at the PC/VDU, and features are provided such as caller-ID on the client's VDU. Several ways of accomplishing the call-waiting system are taught.

A communication system for coupling incoming calls from a calling party to a called party. The system includes at least one paging device and a plurality of other communications devices associated with prospective called parties, each of the other communications devices possessing communications capabilities different from the paging device. A programmed computer is responsive to signalling information in an incoming call for determining which paging device is associated with the called party and for determining which of the other communications devices is associated with the called party. An alerting signal is coupled to that paging device to alert the called party of the incoming call and a signal transmitted by the called party is detected in order to control further processing of the incoming call.

A method and related apparatus are provided for detecting the presence of a call waiting signal on a telephone line, where the call waiting signal is embedded in various signals. The call waiting signal frequency is isolated from the various other frequencies. The isolated call waiting frequency is then biased so that only the positive voltage portions of the signal are allowed to pass. Each positive voltage pulse as well as the zero voltage pulses are then sampled to determine whether they are representative of a biased call waiting signal. Each time a determination is made, one is added to a count on an up-down counter. When the count reaches a predetermined number, a call waiting signal is detected on the telephone line. Preferably an alarm signals the presence of a detected call waiting signal to the user. A disconnect switch interrupts a modem so that a person using the modem on the same telephone line will have sufficient time to answer a detected incoming call.

A method and system for transmitting a message obtained from a message delivery database in a calling name delivery service environment. A communication is received from a calling party directory number and directed to a code number. In response to the communication, a called party directory number associated with the communication is obtained. Next, an indication of a selected message is received from a list of messages. A prefix corresponding to the selected message is obtained from the message delivery database. The prefix and the calling party directory number are populated in a signaling message pertaining to the communication. The signaling message containing the prefix and the calling party directory number is transmitted to a network element serving the called party directory number. In response to receipt of the signaling message of the network element, a message translation of the prefix is obtained from a message translation database, and the message translation is transmitted to a called party display unit.

A method and system for making an emergency call while on-line on a computer includes an input device attached to the computer adapted to receive a command from a computer user for making an emergency call. When user initiates a command to make an emergency call from the input device, a software program executing on the computer overrides all computer functions and transmits the emergency call to an emergency call receiver through the network or by a telephone line. The software program takes priority over all other computer applications on the computer. The invention transmits the emergency call using a computer generated signal, or by computer generated voice, or by way of a facsimile transmission. The emergency call may also include additional pre-stored information held in a memory program, such as address, telephone, e-mail, and medical information, which may be automatically sent along with the emergency call to the emergency call receiver.

A locator system has a plurality of locator transmitters, each transmitter transmitting a unique locator signal. Paging devices are carried by each user of the locator system and each paging device includes: (i) a receiver responsive to signals broadcast from the locator transmitters, (ii) a unique identification code stored therein, and (iii) a signal transmitter and controller for controlling the signal transmitter, the controller causing the transmitter to transmit location and identification signals based upon the locator signal received by the receiver and the unique identification code. A receiver is responsive to the signals transmitted by the signal transmitters in the paging devices and a control system handles communications from other parties to the users. The control system is coupled with the receiver and responsive to received location and identification signals to determine where to direct communications from other parties intended for a user.

Method and apparatus for managing a telecommunications call in a telecommunications network from a caller to an end user. According to the method, telephone calls for subscribers of an automated attendant service are automatically answered by: (a) obtaining a number from a caller using an audio menu to prompt input of the number; (b) signaling a first physical switch connecting the caller to the automated attendant service to place the caller on hold; (c) calling a telephone corresponding to the number input by the caller while the caller is on hold, the calling step including the substeps of: (c1) accessing a number specification matrix to identify a telephone corresponding to the number, (c2) accessing a subscriber data base to determine a transfer method for transfers to the number of a subscriber; and (c3) calling a telephone number corresponding to the number using the transfer method determined in step (c2). The method also includes (d) connecting the caller directly to the telephone corresponding to the number if the calling of step (c) reaches a called party and an indication is obtained to connect the caller and the called party; and (e) performing a failed call procedure if the connecting of step (d) is not performed.

An apparatus and method are provided for multimedia communications with multiple network functionality, such as conflict resolution for multiple simultaneous communication sessions involving separate and independent networks and call types, such as video and voice. The apparatus includes a first network interface, such as a cable interface (120), an ISDN interface (125) or a telephony interface (130), with the first network interface coupleable to a first network for communication of a first network signal; a second network interface, the second network interface coupleable to a second network for communication of a second network signal; a user interface such as a user/audio interface (135) for reception of a plurality of control signals; and a processor arrangement (143) responsive through a set of program instructions, when operably coupled, to determine a presence of a first network communication session, to further determine an occurrence of the second network signal, and upon the occurrence of the second network signal during the first network communication session, to provide a distinctive alert to the user interface during the first network communication session indicating the occurrence of the second network signal.

Methods and apparatus are described for facilitating multiple data communications with a first platform (100, 102, and 104) using a single communication conduit (108) having first and second channels. First data are transmitted between the first platform and a second platform (114) via the first and second channels (202). It is determined whether an incoming call comprises second data of a particular type (206). Where the incoming call comprises the second data of the particular type (208), transmission of the first data via the second channel is inhibited (226) thereby enabling reception of the second data by the first platform via the second channel while the first data continue to be transmitted via the first channel. The second data are then received at the first platform via the second channel (230). Transmission of the first data via the first and second channels is resumed in response to termination of transmission of the second data (266).
