A digital first-in first-out (FIFO) buffer (10) for use with Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) superconductive integrated circuits. The digital FIFO buffer (10) includes a clock-storage circuit (14) for receiving and storing load and read clock signals (100, 104) and a data-storage circuit (16) connected to the clock-storage circuit (14) for receiving and storing data signal pulses (102) in the order which the data signal pulses (102) are received relative to the load clock signal (100). The data-storage circuit (16) outputs the SFQ pulse signal independent of the load clock signal (100). The previously stored clock and data signal pulses (100, 102) provide physical back pressure to their subsequent signal pulses.

There is disclosed a bifrequency output device. The bifrequency output device comprises Josephson junctions, a resistor for generating a given voltage in response to a pulse current which is supplied from the outside, and a time delay element for delaying the voltage generated by the resistor during a given time period and then providing it to the superconducting elements, so that the bifrequency output device outputs different low frequency and low voltage and high frequency and high voltage depending on the initial condition of the superconducting elements constituting the Josephson junctions and the voltage with a given delay time which is induced to the superconducting elements.

Active superconducting devices are formed of thin films of superconductor which include a main conduction channel which has an active weak link region. The weak link region is composed of an array of links of thin film superconductor spaced from one another by voids and selected in size and thickness such that magnetic flux can propagate across the weak link region when it is superconducting. Magnetic flux applied to the weak link region will propagate across the array of links causing localized loss of superconductivity in the links and changing the effective resistance across the links. The magnetic flux can be applied from a control line formed of a superconducting film deposited coplanar with the main conduction channel and weak link region on a substrate. The devices can be formed of any type to superconductor but are particularly well suited to the high temperature superconductors since the devices can be entirely formed from coplanar films with no overlying regions. The devices can be utilized for a variety of electrical components, including switching circuits, amplifiers, oscillators and modulators, and are well suited to microwave frequency applications.

A Josephson pulse generator of the current injection type is composed of a first group of N (N.gtoreq.2) resistors, one end of each being connected together, the other ends of two of the N resistors being connected to first and second nodes. A second group of serially connected N-1 resistors is connected between the first and second nodes and to the other ends of the N-2 resistors in the first group not connected to the first and second nodes. N Josephson junctions are each connected between a reference potential and the other end of a different one of the N resistors. Two additional Josephson junctions, each having one end thereof connected, respectively, to the first node and the second node is provided along with an additional resistor connected between the other end of the Josephson junction connected to the first node and the reference potential.

A superconducting memory cell which includes a single Josephson junction or write gate disposed in a superconducting loop having improved sense margins is disclosed. The improved sense margins are achieved by fabricating the superconducting loop so that first and second branches thereof have different inductances. In a specific example, a first branch containing the single Josephson junction has the higher inductance. Still more specifically, the inductance of the first branch containing the Josephson junction or write gate is twice as great as the inductance of the other branch when the I.sub.min of the write gate is zero. In addition, another Josephson junction or sense gate must be disposed in electromagnetically coupled relationship with the second branch of the loop, and binary information must be stored in the form of clockwise and counterclockwise circulating currents of equal magnitude. Writing and reading are accomplished by coincident currents being applied to the cell. A cell having a single control current in addition to a gate current for coincident current selection of a desired cell is shown. A similar cell having at least another control current in addition to the previously mentioned control current and a gate current for coincident current selection is also disclosed. The latter cell, embodied in array form, has a plurality of horizontally disposed control lines each of which intersects a row of memory cells. In addition, a diagonally disposed control line intersects the write gates of adjacent cells which are disposed in diagonally spaced relationship with each other. Arrays which include diagonal control lines have improved write margins and, if they conform to the criteria outlined above, they also have improved sense margins.

Josephson tunneling devices are used as parametrons in circuits for logic and memory. Parametron circuits are used as input devices to conventional pulsed Josephson tunneling device circuitry, and as output devices from pulsed Josephson tunneling device circuitry. Therefore, transfers from phase information to pulse information and from pulse information to phase information are obtained. Interconnection between superconducting circuit chips is achieved using Josephson tunneling parametrons and Josephson tunneling detectors. Another interconnection scheme uses capacitive coupling between superconducting circuit chips without physical interconnections therebetween, and employs Josephson tunneling devices on separate chips for the receiving and sending circuitry.

Switching and memory circuits which employ tunneling devices having nonlinearities are made more reliable by making each device a series arrangement of tunnel junctions. This built-in redundancy of each switching element eliminates problems due to frequent device short circuits, especially where there are thin tunnel barriers and the devices are operated under extreme temperature ranges. In a particular case, Josephson devices are used, each of which is a thin film structure having stacked junctions, i.e., a plurality of alternate layers of metal and tunnel barrier.

This disclosure relates to a low temperature circuit element exhibiting radio frequency or AC Josephson effects comprising a member constructed of metal capable of superconductivity at low temperatures and a second member constructed of a metal that is normal or nonsuperconductive. One of the members has a generally flat surface and the other has a tapered end either in the form of a point or a line positioned in contact with the flat surface. The disclosure also relates to the method of constructing a low temperature circuit element which comprises taking a material exhibiting superconducting effects when cooled to a critical temperature and another material of the normal or nonsuperconductive type. A flat surface is formed on the one member, while a tapered end, either in the form of a point or knife edge, is formed on the other. The members are cooled to a temperature equal to or below the critical temperature of the superconductive material. The member having the tapered end is then moved into engagement with the flat surface in a direction generally perpendicular to the plane of the flat surface.
