    摘要: A trailed vehicle has at least one beam axle (but perhaps two with or without load sharing coupling) with the wheels independently suspended on leading or trailing arm members. The axle is mounted to the chassis or body so that in bump or positive roll conditions when a wheel on one side and the body or chassis move closer together, the axle moves forwardly at that side resulting in the steering of the wheels in a direction to counter the effects of the displacing force acting on the trailed vehicle and thus undesirable effects exerted by the trailed vehicle on the towing vehicle. A ''''bolt-on'''' suspension unit has a torsionally resilient beam axle, a primary torsion suspension for the arm members and a secondary suspension allowing forward movement of either side of the axle about one of a pair of transversely aligned pivots in reaction to torque imposed on that side of the axle under bump or positive roll conditions.

    摘要: A suspension of the type having the weight of the vehicle supported by torsion springs. A rigid shaft is disposed longitudinally of the vehicle adjacent each wheel. Three torsion springs are disposed in longitudinally spaced relationship about each shaft and each spring has an annulus of elastomer as the yieldable portion. Each spring has a rigid outer shell received over the elastomer annulus. A rigid arm is attached to the outer shell of the end springs to connect them resiliently in parallel. Additional arms are rigidly cantilevered from each end of each shaft. In one form of the suspension, the free ends of the arms from the shaft are pivotally connected through shackles to the vehicle frame and the free ends of the arms from the springs secured to the wheel axle. In another form of the suspension, the outer shells of the springs are secured to the vehicle frame and the free end of the arms from the shaft pivotally connected to the axle of the wheel. The center spring has the free end of the arm attached to its outer shell secured to the wheel axle in the first-mentioned form and secured to the vehicle frame in the latter form. Adjustment means are provided on the attachment of the center spring arm for preloading the center spring.

    摘要: A variable rate bushing passively controls the stiffness of a stabilizer bar. During normal vehicle operation, the stabilizer bar is compliant. As twist increase, the resistance increases. In one embodiment, the variable rate bushing includes at least one void which compresses as the vehicle turns. As the stabilizer bar axially twists, the void compresses and the rate of the bushing increases, reducing axial twist and increasing stiffness of the stabilizer bar. In one embodiment, the voids are teardrop shaped, arc shaped, or bone shaped. Alternatively, the bushing includes an inner layer of softer material and an outer layer of harder material to control stabilizer bar stiffness. Also, the bushing may include a molded insert made of a hard material inserted into a softer material to control the stiffness of the stabilizer bar.
