The insulative pad has an MDI binder and reinforcement fibers distributed uniformly and randomly within a first plane. The process includes mixing a porous fiber material with a MDI adhesive. The fiber batt is compressed between a pair of porous belts. Steam and heat are applied to the compressed batt to form a bound flexible batting material.

The arrangement includes a cabinet for receiving opened and blending fibers, and a fiber web forming chute receiving the fibers from the cabinet. A packing member is positioned adjacent the exit end, engages with and compresses the emerging fiber web to a desired density and height. The air flow system includes an air removal system which is located in the upper wall and the packing member. The removal system causes the air to exit the web forming chute upwardly, passing through the web. The air flow engages with fibers forming the web, maintaining the various size fibers evenly distributed throughout the web.

An apparatus for forming a non-woven fiber baft of fibrous material which includes a housing connecting with a plurality of feed chutes which feed fibers from a plurality of sources into a mixing chamber. Feed rolls, adjacent each discharge end of the feed chutes, are driven at selected speeds to withdraw fibers from the feed chutes at selected rates. A combing roll within the mixing chamber acts to assist the fibers from the mixing chamber into a beater chamber where they are further blended and opened. From the beater chamber the fibers move into a batt forming chute where they are formed into a fiber batt. The batt forming chute includes a packing belt and a vibrating assembly each driven at selected speeds to compact the fibers into a fiber batt of desired density. Volume dependent controls within the batt forming chute act to control the rate of the feed rolls and the beater roll while weight or density dependent controls outside the batt forming chute act to control the rate of the packing belt and the vibrating assembly.

A mote knife for use with a cleaning system including a rotating cylinder which creates a binary air flow while which entrains a fiber web formed of fibers of various fiber lengths about a circular path. A waste removal duct is arranged adjacent the periphery of the cylinder. A mote knife, which includes a contact surface positioned adjacent the periphery of the cylinder, a front edge located a first distance from the periphery of the cylinder, an intermediate edge located a second distance from the periphery of the cylinder and a rear edge located and a third distance from the periphery of the cylinder. A first channel is formed between the periphery and the front and intermediate edges which converges toward the intermediate edge. A second channel is formed between the periphery and the intermediate and rear edges which diverges toward the rear edge. Rotation of the cylinder creates a venturi effect at the intermediate edge which brings the flow of binary air to its greatest velocity. The air flow leading to the intermediate edge draws loose longer fibers back into the web. The velocity of air flow beyond the intermediate edge drops rapidly allowing dust, trash, and short fibers to lift away from the cylinder due to centrifugal force.

A covering device is disclosed for substantially blocking solar rays and heat coming inwardly through an architectural opening while allowing substantial visibility outwardly through the covering and opening. The covering includes a plurality of sun blocking cells having inner perimeter walls with a depth which is effective for blocking the sun rays entering at various vertical and horizontal angles. In particular, the sides of the perimeter wall are effective for blocking sun entering at side or horizontal angles. Preferably the cells are made from thin strip material so that the covering has a total open area greater than 80% or more from a front view looking outward. Open areas as high as 95% may be achieved with the invention, while blocking substantial amounts of solar rays and heat.

The weighed fibers are supplied on an apron feed (22) to a pneumatic delivery system (28). The delivery of weighed fibers by apron feeder (22) may be adjusted by adjusting the speed of an apron feed roll (50a). This maintains a prescribed quantity or level of fiber in a fiber storage chute feed (32). Pressure sensed by a pressure gauge (52) is used to indicate quantity of fiber in chute feed (32) and pressure signal (53) is fed to computer (A) for control of delivery roll (50a). Card feed roll (62) which feeds fibers in the form of a batt (35) from chute feed (32) to the carding machine is controlled by computer (A) in synchronization with the speed of the carding machine as sensed by doffer roll (68). A preset web weight signal (48) is compared to an actual weight signal (46) representing the actual weight of fibers supplied. Any difference between is compensated for by adjustment of the operation of card feed roll (62), and adjustment of fiber supply roll (14).

Apparatus for opening compressed bales of fiber includes means for supporting one or more of said compressed bales of fiber in a row. A reciprocating tower is provided and supported for reciprocating alongside the row of said bales of fiber and has a cantilevered portion which extends over the row of bales of fiber at a height which is adjustable. Reducing means is supported by the cantilevered portion over the top surface of the bales for removing fiber therefrom. A horizontal channel is disposed adjacent to and above the reducing means for receiving fiber removed from the bale by the reducing means. The horizontal channel is connected to a telescoping vertical channel within the tower means for delivering fiber from the reducing means to the discharge channel in the tower when a suction force is created therein. A scanning means is provided for measuring the density of fiber within the horizontal and vertical channel and for generating a signal which corresponds to the density of the fiber measured in the channel and a control means is provided for receiving the signal generated by the scanning means and for adjusting the height of the cantilevered portion so as to maintain a predetermined fiber density within the channels. The scanning means may comprise a light barrier arrangement or an ultrasonic means.

Apparatus is disclosed for reducing bales of fiber which includes a tower that reciprocates alongside a row of bales. The tower has a cantilevered portion which extends transversely over the row of the bales and supports two milling rollers for removing fiber from the upper surface of the bales. The cantilevered portion has a generally horizontal fiber collecting channel for receiving fiber removed from the bales, and includes a closed chamber in which is located a single drive for driving the two milling rollers in opposite directions. An adjustable vent permits passage of varying amounts of the atmosphere through the closed chamber. The closed chamber is connected to the horizontal channel so that air currents created by suction through the vent convey fibers removed from the bales by the milling rollers to a fiber collection point within the tower.
