摘要: In some implementations, an optical isolator core includes a Faraday rotator and a plurality of birefringent crystal plates. The plurality of birefringent crystal plates may include a first birefringent crystal plate to separate input light into light having a first polarization and light having a second polarization, and a second birefringent crystal plate to combine the light having the first polarization and the light having the second polarization in output light that is laterally displaced by the single stage optical isolator. The Faraday rotator may be provided between the first birefringent crystal plate and the second birefringent crystal plate. In some implementations, the plurality of birefringent crystal plates further include a third birefringent crystal plate provided between the Faraday rotator and the second birefringent crystal plate. Additionally, or alternatively, the optical isolator core may further include a half-wave plate arranged between the Faraday rotator and the first birefringent crystal plate.

摘要: An optical amplifier device employing a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) that reduces the amount of residual pump power in the optical output of the amplifier is disclosed. The MZI amplifier employs two geometrically linear optical amplifier arms or two multi-spatial-mode racetrack optical amplifiers to amplify a signal with a pumping beam, with the signal output port having extremely low levels of residual pump power. The MZI optical amplifier is a silicon photonic integrated circuit, with all optical amplifiers, couplers, phase shifters, and optical attenuators formed of silicon photonic integrated circuit elements. The MZI optical amplifier may include one, two, or three MZI stages, and multiple MZI optical amplifiers may be used in parallel or sequentially to achieve higher overall signal gain or power. The MZI optical amplifier may employ Brillouin-scattering-based amplifiers, Raman-based integrated waveguide optical amplifiers, or Erbium-doped integrated waveguide optical amplifiers.

摘要: A system includes a planar waveguide that includes an active gain medium configured to receive pump light from a pump source and amplify stimulated emission light. The planar waveguide has a fast axis and a slow axis and is configured to operate in single mode in the fast axis and multimode in the slow axis. The system also includes a hybrid spatial filter configured to receive the amplified stimulated emission light from the planar waveguide and output laser light. The hybrid spatial filter includes a physical slit having a narrower dimension corresponding to the slow axis of the planar waveguide. The physical slit is configured to reduce an intensity of the amplified stimulated emission light received from the planar waveguide. The hybrid spatial filter also includes a Volume Bragg Grating (VBG) configured to constrain an angle of the amplified stimulated emission light and enable compact geometry intra-cavity beam expanding/collimating optics.

摘要: A method for preparing an erbium (Er)- or erbium oxygen (Er/O)-doped silicon-based luminescent material emitting a communication band at room temperature. The method comprising the following steps: (a) doping a single crystalline silicon wafer with erbium ion implantation or co-doping the single crystalline silicon wafer with erbium ion and oxygen ion implantation simultaneously to obtain an Er- or Er/O-doped silicon wafer, wherein the single crystalline silicon wafer is a silicon wafer with a germanium epitaxial layer, or an SOI silicon wafer with silicon on an insulating layer or other silicon-based wafers; and (b) subjecting the Er- or Er/O-doped silicon wafer to a deep-cooling annealing treatment, the deep-cooling annealing treatment includes a temperature increasing process and a rapid cooling process.

摘要: A chip-scale mode-locked laser including a cavity including a gain medium for amplifying signal electromagnetic radiation (signal) through stimulated emission, the signal comprising a signal wavelength; and a passive or active mode-locking device to enforce pulse formation in the laser. The mode-locking device includes a thin-film waveguide having a thickness on the order of the signal wavelength so as to confine and guide the signal along the thin-film waveguide, and a material comprising a second-order nonlinear susceptibility to enable active or passive mode-locking of the signal. The mode-locking device leads to generation of pulses of the signal outputted from the mode-locked laser.
