An echo canceler (34) includes a summing device (104) that subtracts a correction signal from a received signal, the difference of which represents the far-end signal with an error component. Instead of adapting its coefficients using the output of the summing device (104), the echo canceler (34) uses the difference between the input and output of a decision device (108) as an estimate of the error component alone. The estimate of the error component is then used to adapt the coefficients according to the adaptive least mean squares (LMS) algorithm. In one embodiment, the decision device (108) forms discrete multi-tone symbols based on the equalized output of the summing device. In this embodiment, the echo canceler (34) performs an inverse of the equalization step efficiently by replacing a division operation with a multiply operation and a corresponding power-of-two shift operation.

An echo canceller is described with improved performance. The echo canceller is capable of maintaining audio quality with less consumption of processor cycles by initially segmenting coefficients corresponding to successive audio samples of a delay line into a predetermined number of segments. The coefficients are used in computing an echo estimate. Upon segmenting the coefficients, certain segments are assigned to a first segment group, where the coefficients of that group are updated more frequently than coefficients assigned to one or more of the remaining groups. In one embodiment, this grouping is achieved by periodically computing a cumulative magnitude of the coefficients of each segment for all coefficients of the segments and subsequently placing a lesser number of segments with the highest cumulative coefficient magnitudes into the first segment group. Of course, in lieu of cumulative magnitude calculations, the energy of the coefficients may be computed. In any event, the remainder of the segments may be placed into a second segment group or multiple groups that are updated less frequently than the first segment group.

A method and system provides connections to an ATM system and includes selective echo cancellation. The invention includes two interworking units, an echo canceller, and a signaling processor. The signaling processor receives and processes signaling to provide connection control instructions to the interworking units. The first interworking unit will accept a connection, and if the connection does not require echo cancellation, interwork the incoming connection with an ATM connection to the ATM system. If the incoming connection requires echo cancellation, the first interworking unit will interwork the incoming connection with an ATM connection to the second interworking unit. The second interworking unit will interwork the ATM connection with another connection to echo cancellation. After echo cancellation, the second interworking unit will interwork the connection from echo cancellation with another ATM connection to the ATM system.

A digital subscriber line communication system does not require the use of a plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter in the resident's home. Digital signal-processing techniques are utilized to accommodate varying subscriber line conditions coming from POTS telephone equipment. The digital signal-processing techniques eliminate the need for a splitter by reducing susceptibility to distortion resulting from varying subscriber line characteristics. The digital subscriber line modem can utilize quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signals and frequency division multiplexing. The digital subscriber line modem includes a control circuit that implements an echo canceler and an analyzer to reduce near-end cross-talk noise. The analyzer performs spectral analysis to preemphasize or to predistort the transmitted signals in accordance with the cross-talk noise.

A communication line having a plurality of twisted wire pairs connects a plurality of transmitters, one transmitter at each end of each twisted wire pair, with a plurality of receivers, one receiver at each end of each twisted wire pair. Each receiver receives a combination signal including a direct signal from the transmitter at the opposite end of the twisted wire pair with which the receiver is associated and a plurality of far-end crosstalk (FEXT) impairment signals, one from each of the remaining transmitters at the opposite end of the communications line. A plurality of FEXT cancellation systems, one associated with each receiver, provides a replica FEXT impairment signal. A device associated with each receiver is responsive to the combination signal received by the receiver and the replica FEXT impairment signal provided by the FEXT cancellation system associated with the receiver for substantially removing the FEXT impairment signals from the combination signal. If necessary, a skew adjuster delays the arrival of the combination signal at the device so that the combination signal and the FEXT impairment signal arrive at the device at substantially the same time. A sequential decoder operates on signals from each of the plurality of wire pairs simultaneously to produce receiver outputs. A plurality of near-end crosstalk (NEXT) cancellation systems and echo cancellers remove NEXT and echo impairment signals from the combination signal.
