    摘要: A magnetic head slider having an air bearing surface is used for reading and writing data from a magnetic medium. The magnetic head includes a substrate having a disc opposing face bounded by a leading face, a trailing face, and first and second sided edges. The slider includes an end layer positioned upon the trailing face of the substrate wherein the basecoat has a disc opposing face and is comprised of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate. An air bearing pad is formed solely on the disc opposing face of the end layer. A transducing head is formed in the air bearing pad and exposed at an air bearing surface.

    摘要: A slider head assembly is provided which includes a slider head for reading/writing data on the surface of a rotating disc. The slider head is disposed in spaced relationship with respect to the disc for read/write (R/W) operations. The slider head assembly is comprised of a body portion having an essentially planar surface positioned to co-act with the surface of the disc with a proximal end and a distal end. The proximal end or trailing slider surface of the head assembly has a read/write element thereat. The distal end or leading slider surface of the assembly has an actuation device mounted thereon, having a surface the position of which can be modified by an external signal to change the position of the head with respect to the planar or air bearing surface (ABS) of the head assembly. This will change the characteristics of the boundary layer of air between the rotating disc and the head, causing the head assembly to move closer to or farther from the rotating disc when actuated by the external signal. A preferred embodiment is a patterned heating element which selectively heats the edge of the leading surface of the slider to cause position modification of the device. The invention also contemplates the head assembly in combination with the rotating disc and a method of controlling the height of the head assembly with respect to the rotating disc.

    摘要: Herein is disclosed a method and apparatus for reducing particle collection on a slider or gimbal tongue. The gimbal tongue is shaped so as to interact with airflow within a disc drive to direct particles away from the slider and gimbal tongue. The leading edge of the gimbal tongue overhangs the leading edge of the slider. As air current approaches such a geometry, a large pocket of slow moving, high pressure air is created just upwind of the slider. Thus, as particulate matter encounters this pocket, the matter is slowed and its momentum is partially dissipated. A vent is provided in the gimbal tongue. The vent permits an escape route for the particles to move to an area of lower pressure, located on the other side of the gimbal tongue.

The air bearing slider lifts off the recording medium with a predetermined take-off velocity when the recording medium begins to move. The air bearing slider has a first etched region that has a first etch depth and a second etched region that has a second etch depth. The etch depth ratio of the first etch depth to the second etch depth provides a pad-type air bearing slider with a take-off velocity ratio that is greater than or equal to 100%. The etch depth ratio of the first etch depth to the second etch depth provides a rail-type air bearing slider with a take-off velocity ratio that is greater than or equal to approximately 70%.

    摘要: A disc drive includes a base, a disc stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly. The actuator assembly also includes a load spring and an attached slider. The slider has an air-bearing surface that a leading edge, a trailing edge, and a center pad positioned near the trailing edge. A transducer is positioned within the center pad. The center pad has a channel cavity therein which is substantially parallel to the trailing edge. The channel cavity is positioned near or at the transition between the material making up the slider and an alumina portion. The channel cavity splits the center pad into a first center pad portion, and a second center pad portion. The width of the channel cavity is controlled to control the amount of movement between a substrate portion of the slider and a portion covering the trailing edge of the slider which results from annealing the slider.
