摘要: An information storage device (10, 510, 610, 710, 810) includes a cradle (12, 512, 612, 712, 812) which can removably receive a cartridge (11, 411, 511, 611, 711) that contains a rotatable hard disk (91, 326-327). A read/write head (107, 331-334) is supported for movement adjacent the disk by a pivotal actuator arm (101). The cradle controls alignment of the head with the disk using feedback servo tracking. Calibration parameters used to perform this tracking, such as servo information or read channel information, may be stored in a special track (414) which is on the disk, and which may be a read-only track. The special track stores a plurality of sets of calibration parameters, each corresponding to a respective combination of a cradle and an environmental characteristic such as temperature. The special track may also be used to store the number of times that the cartridge has been inserted into each of several different cradles, as well as a selected retry method which is more likely than other methods to be successful in recovering data that was subject to errors.

摘要: An improved E-block for positioning one or more transducer assemblies proximate one or more rotating storage disks of a disk drive is provided herein. The E-block includes an actuator hub and one or more actuator arms which cantilever away from the actuator hub for holding the transducer assemblies proximate the rotating storage disks. As provided herein, at least one of the actuator arms is a depopulated actuator arm which retains less than two transducer assemblies. Each depopulated actuator arm includes at least one, weighted segment integrally formed into the depopulated actuator arm. Further, each depopulated actuator arm has an arm thickness which is less than an arm thickness for a double head actuator arm. The weighted segment and the reduced arm thickness allow the depopulated actuator arm(s) to vibrate similar to a populated actuator arm(s). This allows the disk drive to be designed and tuned to improve fragility and resonance characteristics of the E-block.

摘要: A microactuating suspension assembly used for a disc drive is disclosed. The microactuating suspension assembly has a suspension load beam and a microactuator placed on the suspension load beam for bending the suspension load beam at the front end thereof during a sustained period of data read/write time and thus achieving a desired average fly-height which is different from an unaltered average fly-height which would have been achieved without the microactuator. In particular, the microactuating suspension assembly can be used to achieve a very low fly-height. Additionally, very large bandwidth and very short seeking time is made possible when a bimorph piezoelectric microactuator is used.

摘要: The magnetic disk apparatus and methods for writing servo data in the magnetic disk drive apparatus detects a relative position between a magnetic head and a writing surface and performs a feedback on the detected relative position for determining the servo data writing position. Based on reference servo patterns that are preliminarily recorded on a portion of at least one surface of the disk, two pairs of head elements, arranged facing respective surfaces of the disk, alternately perform postscript operations of servo patterns while reducing a relative position error between the head and the disk in order to increase writing accuracy of the servo patterns writing operation.

摘要: A data storage device includes a head suspension assembly having an attached airfoil. The airfoil is coupled to an active (i.e., movable) element that responds to signals from height control circuitry. A method of controlling a height of an air bearing surface includes positioning a suspension assembly having an airfoil and an air bearing disk head over a surface of a rotating data storage disk. A position (e.g., an angle) of the airfoil can then be dynamically altered to change a distance of the disk head perpendicular to the surface of the disk.

摘要: A flying slider is disclosed for a rigid disk drive application. The slider includes a wear pad disposed at least substantially at its trailing edge on a lower surface thereof. An appropriate transducer(s) is typically embedded within this wear pad. One or more air bearing surfaces are disposed on the lower surface of the slider as well for allowing the slider to fly relative to the disk. At least one of these air bearing surfaces is disposed close to this wear pad, but is separated therefrom by a recess which is of a depth so as to not have the wear pad function as an air bearing surface. On the initial operation of the disk drive with the described slider therein, the uplifting forces applied to the slider by the noted air bearing surfaces are insufficient to dispose the wear pad above the glide avalanche of the disk or to fly the slider such that the wear pad is disposed above the glide height. Therefore, the wear pad is burnished in the initial operation of the disk drive and typically prior to releasing the disk drive for distribution. Burnishing of the wear pad continues until a small space develops between the wear pad and the disk (e.g., slightly above the glide height). Once burnishing operations are completed, the wear pad is no longer subjected to any substantial wearing or burnishing, and the fly height of the slider is only slightly greater than the glide height which enhances the exchange of signals between the transducer(s) and disk.

摘要: A slider is provided for actively controlling a fly height of the slider relative to a data storage disc during operation of a data storage system. The slider includes a slider body having front and back surfaces, a length and a crown curvature on the front surface along the length. The slider also includes first and second elongated rails which are positioned on the front surface along the length of the slider body and form first and second bearing surfaces. Each bearing surface includes a leading portion, a trailing portion and a waist portion, wherein the waist portion is wider than the leading and trailing portions and has a maximum width within a middle half of the length of the slider body. A deformable material is positioned on the slider body having a dimension that is changeable in response to an electrical control signal applied in a deformable material, wherein a change in the dimension causes a change in the crown curvature.
