A method of segmenting objects in an image is described. The method applies a Top Hat algorithm to the image then constructs inner and outer markers for application to the original image in a Watershed algorithm. The inner marker is constructed using binary erosion. The outer marker is constructed using binary dilation and perimeterisation. The method finds particular application for first level segmentation of a cell nucleus prior to detailed analysis.

The disclosed invention accomplishes this by receiving image information from multiple sensors; identifying small structure or object information in each image by setting a predefined object/background threshold; separating the object or small structure from the background or large structure in each image; blending the object information from each image into a single composite object image; blending the background information from each image into a single composite background image; combining the composite object image with the composite background image to produce a composite image containing all of the pertinent information of each of the original images, and displaying a single composite image containing all of the pertinent information contained in each of the original images.

A method and system for enabling writings and/or drawings created during or in advance of a virtual meeting or the like to be electronically delivered to an online audience or stored for subsequent on-demand viewing such that the writings and/or drawings may be replicated on an audience member's computer in a manner that makes them clearly readable. The invention is implemented via a software application that runs on a computer to which a video capture device is connected. The software application and/or computer peripheral components process captured video content to filter out data that do not pertain to the writings and/or drawings, based on the unique characteristics of writings and drawings as compared with other artifacts that may occupy the visual images. The remaining pertinent data is then transmitted to the on-line audience or saved for later on-demand viewing. In an additional implementation, a composite image comprising a writing area portion and an additional portion of the visual content of the presentation is replicated for online viewing.

In a system, such as in a digital copier, for classifying image data derived from an original image, the image data is enhanced before submission to a classification analysis. In the enhancement, portions of the image having a measured roughness (degree of gray level discontinuity) within a certain range are artificially increased in roughness. This increased roughness in the enhanced image data serves to increase confidence of the classification analysis for detecting low-frequency halftone screens, so that such low-frequency halftone areas are not misclassified as contone or high-frequency halftone areas.

A process for estimating the noise level of a sequence of images comprises the operations of: producing a local estimate of the noise level of the said images, creating the histogram of the said estimate, deriving at least one parameter of the said histogram, and determining, by calculation or by means of an empirical relation, at least one noise level parameter on the basis of the said at least one parameter derived from the histogram. The corresponding device can be incorporated, for example, in an MPEG-2 encoder, where the parameter identifying the noise level is used for the adjustment of the internal variables of the encoding process.
