摘要: The present invention is a multiplexer for use with an apparatus for optically analyzing a sample. This multiplexer includes a body portion having a primary inlet port. The light received through the light inlet port is sent through a first fiber optic bundle which may be rotated by a fiber carriage to any of several outlet fiber couplers which may be connected to various samples. A position optical sensor assures proper alignment between the first fiber optic bundle and the fiber couplers by sensing the position of a chopper disc which is mounted to the rotating fiber carriage. Once light is passed through the sample, it is passed back into the multiplexer through inlet fiber couplers. These additional fiber couplers are linked to a second fiber optic bundle leading to a detector fiber coupler which may be connected to a fixed fiber cable.

摘要: Precise axial alignment of fibers to be connected is achieved with a male-to-male arrangement consisting of substantially identical fiber-receiving substrates and a coupler element which takes several configurations. A lensing element such as a ball/sphere is positioned in a well placed directly beyond a precision V-groove formed on a substrate surface, so that the fiber axes extend through substantially the center of the lensing element and are coaxial. The coupler contains a fiber-aligning V-groove and reference surface zones that interact in various ways with two ball-alignment elements of the substrates, to maintain critical substrate surfaces parallel to and precisely spaced from the coupler's reference surfaces.

摘要: A first embodiment of an optical splice having a frame with a channel; two rods each having a resilient exterior surface disposed in the channel; and a lid adapted to be received on the frame over the channel, the lid having a resilient surface adapted to allow compression of optical fibers placed end to end for splicing between the rods by the lid and the rods. The frame and lid are placed within a tubular housing and a tubular sleeve which is attached at the ends following insertion of the optical fibers. An additional embodiment of an optical splice contains first tube, a ferrule and an optical fiber, the optical fiber having first and second portions, the optical fiber first portion disposed inside of and affixed to the ferrule and the optical fiber second portion lying outside of the ferrule and inside of the first tube and a portion of the ferrule disposed inside of and affixed to the first tube; an alignment device and a second tube, both of which are disposed in the first tube; another optical fiber having a terminal end portion, the terminal end portion disposed in the second tube and said alignment device; and, a housing-coupling device affixed to the first tube, the housing-coupling device adapted to be removably coupled to a receiving device.

摘要: A protective tube arrangement particularly useful for positioning the end of a glass fiber relative to an opto-electronic component of a module having a housing, which housing engages the protective tube characterized by the glass fiber being secured to the tube at two axially spaced locations with the length of the fiber extending between the two locations and the distance of the tube between the locations being selected so that the fiber has a greater length than the distance for all temperatures below a maximum temperature limit. Thus, the fiber is not subjected to tensile stresses and the distance between the two locations on the tube and the length of the fiber are selected so that the compressive stresses are below 1 N/mm.sup.2 for all temperature ranges between the maximum temperature limit and the minimum temperature limit. The method for securing the fiber in the tube can either be by forming both connections simultaneously or in sequence but forming them at a temperature greater than the maximum temperature limit so that after forming the connection and cooling to the maximum temperature limit or therebelow, the fiber between the two connecting locations will not be subjected to tensile stresses.

摘要: A passive, frequency selective, fiber optic multiplexer, comprises a directional coupler in which a pair of single mode optical fibers are accurately positioned to provide evanescent field coupling, typically by polishing a portion of the cladding from each of said fibers to place the respective cores of said fibers within the evanescent field of light in the other fiber. The coupling efficiency of a coupler constructed in this manner is wavelength dependent, and provides over-coupling, that is, the capability of transferring light, virtually entirely, back and forth between the fibers within the coupler. The wavelength dependent nature of the evanescent field coupling permits multiplexing, specifically between a pair of wavelengths, one of which is coupled in its entirety from a first fiber to a second fiber, and the other of which is essentially uncoupled. By increasing the number of total transfers of the light signals between the pair of fibers, the frequency resolution of the multiplexer may be optimized for light signals of virtually any frequency separation.

摘要: A connector for connecting together in a water-tight housing various optical instruments of an underwater or submarine arrangement having optical fiber cables. The connector is constructed in a manner such that a plug containing the terminals of optical fiber cables is connected in an easily attachable/detachable fashion to a receptacle which is mounted on the water-tight housing. Sealing material is interposed between the water-tight housing and the receptacle and between the receptacle and the plug for preventing the infiltration of water or sea water into the water-tight housing.

摘要: A resilient alignment sleeve for a fiber optic connector which provides preferential attachment to one of two terminal pins. The sleeve has a relatively thick section extending over about 60 to 70% of the length of the sleeve and a relatively thin section extending over the remainder of the sleeve. The sleeve is retained on the terminal pin which is completely surrounded by the thick section due to increased frictional forces as compared with the thin section.

摘要: A splice casing assembly for an elongated splice housing assembly and associated fiber optic cables includes a mounting insert disposed within a substantially tubular casing. A particularized mounting insert is characterized by a rectangular platform portion for supporting the splice housing assembly and by disklike end portions for positioning the insert within the tubular casing. Each of a pair of casing plugs comprises a threaded portion for fastening the plug at an end of the tubular casing and a tapered portion into which a fiber optic connector is threaded. Each of the connectors, a pair are included, comprises a threaded portion, a hexagonal gripping portion, a major cylindrical portion, and a minor cylindrical portion disposed between the hexagonal gripping portion and the major cylindrical portion. The casing assembly is configured so that fiber optic cables, supported by the connectors, may be routed through the connector, through the plug casings and into the splice housing assembly.
