In a sparkplug voltage probe device in use for an internal combustion engine, an insulator base is attached to the internal combustion engine, an upper surface of the insulator base having a plurality of grooves in which the sparkplug cables are placed. An insulator sheet is embedded in the insulator base. An electrode layer is provided on an upper surface of the insulator base along the grooves to form a static capacity between the electrode layer and the sparkplug cables when the voltage is applied across the spark plugs. On a lower surface of the insulator sheet an electrical shield layer is provided connected to the internal combustion engine by a ground wire. A lead wire electrically connects the electrode plate to a microcomputer so as to analyze the engine burning condition based on the static capacity between the electrode plate and the sparkplug cables.

In an ignition indicator system for internal combustion engines, a transformer is interposed in each line between the spark plug and distributor or other timing circuit. The transformer has a sensor element positioned adjacent thereto to be indirectly coupled to the transformer output circuit. Terminal means is provided for connecting the sensor element to detector means which permits analysis of the pulses for firing the spark plug. Preferably, the transformer and the high voltage portion of the ignition system is shielded by a grounded casing or sheath to minimize radiation of signals, as well as to confine any explosion of ignited gases within the casing or sheath. Access to the sensor element does not adversely affect the shielding effect of transformer casing.

The rpm, dwell and timing of an internal combustion engine are measured by starting and stopping a digital counter on the leading edge of pulse waveforms generated either within the engine or by a timing light. To measure rpm and dwell only the low coil signal is used. For rpm measurement, the counter is started when the ignition points open, and stopped upon the next opening of the points. To measure dwell the counter is started by the opening of the points and stopped when the points close, the resultant count being the inverse of dwell, and this count is subtracted from the rpm count to obtain dwell. Timing is measured by starting the counter upon the firing of the number one cylinder, and providing an additional signal delayed in time as a function of the distributor advance to stop the counter. The count in the counter is converted to rpm, dwell or timing by either analog or digital techniques. A high energy ignition adapter circuit prevents triggering of the counter by a false indication of the opening of the points due to a waveform peculiar to low coil signals produced in vehicles using high energy ignition systems. A timing light delay circuit having a variable delay is incorporated with the timing light to produce the delayed signal proportional to distributor advance, the delay being adjustable within two selectable ranges. By measuring and displaying the computed dwell for each cylinder in sequence, distributor mechanical wear associated with shaft bearings and drive gears may be detected. Power contribution and dynamic relative compression for each cylinder may be measured by using the counter to measure the time that the points are open, and the time that the points are closed, for each cylinder in sequence, and displaying the measurements.

The engine rotates a distributor that includes a primary coil which induces voltages in a secondary coil. The secondary coil voltages are sequentially distributed to the spark plugs in order to operate the engine. The engine is provided with a source of common potential, generally referred to as chassis ground.Improved apparatus for displaying the waveform of the voltage produced by the secondary coil includes an oscilloscope having a first input and a second input. A conductive probe is positioned close to the secondary coil, and a single conductor operatively connects the probe to the first input of the oscilloscope. A second conductor operatively connects the second input of the oscilloscope to chassis ground so that the waveform of the voltage produced by the secondary coil is displayed on the oscilloscope.

In order to test a semiconductor spark plug, a test method comprises a step consisting of depositing water on the head of the spark plug, between the two electrodes of same, so that the water forms a water meniscus covering the semiconductor element of the head, a step consisting of applying, between the first terminal and the second terminal of the spark plug, a voltage equal to the operating voltage of the spark plug, a step consisting of identifying at least a first characteristic of electric arcs induced between the electrodes during the application of the voltage, and a step consisting of determining the operational or defective character of the spark plug according to the first characteristic of the electric arcs. This test method is particularly reliable and does not require constraining provisions in order to ensure the safety of the operators implementing the method.

A photographic film is adapted to provide visual record of the occurrence of a transient electrostatic or transient magnetic field by the inclusion of metallic patterns close to the film. The patterns are of a geometry to define gaps at which the fields are concentrated in a manner to interact with the film. The film exhibits a light spot at the gap, when it is developed, if a field of sufficient intensity is present during the test period. The film packet is intended primarily for inclusion in the shipping package for sensitive electronic devices to provide a visual record of exposures during shipment.
