    Abstract: A caliper includes a first leg and a second leg pivotably connected together at first ends thereof. First and second abutting portions are respectively formed on second ends of the first and second legs. First and second slots are respectively defined in the first and second legs and between the first and second ends thereof. An indicator is slideably received in the first and second slots. The indicator is slideable along the first and second slots to move the first and second abutting portions toward each other until the first and the second abutting portions respectively abut against two opposite sides of an object to be gauged by the caliper. The size of the object is indicated by an indicating portion of the indicator that points to a scale on one of the first and second legs.

    Abstract: An illuminated caliper device includes a caliper assembly having first and second caliper legs each having a pointed tip and a pivot end. A pivot support and first and second pivot elements pivotally connects the pivot ends of the first and second caliper legs to the pivot support. A battery housing attached to the pivot support contains a battery. First and second light emitting diodes are coupled by a switch mounted on the battery housing to first and second terminals of the battery and produced light that is directed to areas of the surface to be measured by pointed tips of the legs. The intensity and color of light emitted by the first light emitting diode are such as to sufficiently illuminate the surface under low ambient illumination conditions without disrupting acquired night vision of a user.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a device for describing arcs. The device includes a pair of legs connected at a pivot joint. A shoe is disposed at the end of one leg to support the device and maintain the center point of the arc while the device is used. An instrument is attached to the other leg so arcs can be formed as the device is rotated about the shoe. A rack and wheel are also connected to the legs to adjust the radius of the arc.

    Abstract: A gage for splitting annular seals by establishing two points on a seal's outer edge for cutting lines, and planes through which the cuts should extend. The gage includes two pivotally connected arms equipped with collar assemblies. The collar assemblies include contact edges and offset angle plates. The seal abuts against the contact edges to properly orient the gage and seal. The offset angle plates establish the cutting lines. The gage includes feet which position the gage to stand over the seal.

    Abstract: A caliper is provided to be used with an electronic wheel balancer to measure both the diameter and width of a wheel assembly. The caliper includes a pair of pivotally connected arms which are movable between a spread apart position in which the caliper can measure wheel assembly diameter and a crossed position in which the caliper can be used to measure wheel assembly width. Each arm includes a base portion and a measuring arm extending from the base portion. A measuring arm base is defined between the measuring arm and the caliper arm base. A first set of measuring marks are formed in the caliper arm base for use in measuring the wheel diameter. A second set of measuring marks are formed in the measuring arm base for use in determining wheel width. The second marks are calibrated to account for the width of the metal forming the wheel rim. The caliper arm base includes a pointer, positioned opposite the measuring arm. The pointer points to the second set of marks to indicate the measured wheel width. An edge of the caliper arm base is used to read the first set of measuring marks to determine wheel diameter. The measuring arm has a head which has two pointers. One of the pointers is used to determine wheel assembly width, the other is used to determine diameter.

    Abstract: A refrigeration system includes a latent heat storage tank having an evaporator coil or tube submerged in water and on which a layer of ice forms in response to circulation therethrough of refrigerant from a motor-driven compressor. Apparatus is provided to measure, indicate and regulate the thickness of the ice layer. The apparatus comprises an ice sensing device which provides an electric signal proportional to ice layer thickness to an electrical control circuit which then operates a meter to indicate thickness and operates a motor controller to stop or start the compressor motor. The ice sensing device comprises a probe which is periodically movable back and forth in a short arc in one cycle to detect ice by a timer-actuated electric motor and a potentiometer which moves in response to probe movement to provide a signal porportional to ice thickness to the abovementioned electrical control circuit. Motor control is effected by limit switches and relays and a resettable peak hold circuit to maintain a peak signal value in each cycle despite further movement of the probe and potentiometer.

    Abstract: A tissue thickness measuring instrument for surgical purposes comprising a pair of opposed tissue engaging jaws. Manually graspable actuating means operatively connected to the jaws for shifting the jaws away from each other. A resilient means urges the jaws toward each other with a substantially constant predetermined force over a predetermined working range of separation distance between the jaws. At least one scale with cooperating indicator is provided in association with the jaw actuating means giving a direct reading of the thickness of the tissue being measured. The instrument may be provided with another scale by which the diameter of tubular body elements in the flaccid state can be determined.

    Abstract: A measuring device for measuring the value represented by an indication on a graph, chart, map, or the like, having a calibration scale. The measuring device can accommodate any calibration scale over a wide range. The measuring device includes a first member, having a first reference indication on it, and a second member, having a second reference indication on it. The second member is movable with respect to the first member between a closed position, in which the two reference indications are adjacent each other, and an extended position, in which the two reference indications are separated. A first voltage signal, indicative of the separation of the first and second members, is applied to a ratiometric digital voltmeter which also receives as an input a second voltage signal determined by the setting of a manually adjustable control. The ratiometric digital voltmeter provides an output signal that is indicative of the ratio of its two input voltages, and this output is indicated on a digital display unit. In use, the two reference indications are placed at the two ends of the calibration scale indication of the graph, chart, map, or other such paper, to apply to the ratiometric digital voltmeter a first voltage signal indicative of that calibration scale indication, and the manually adjustable control is adjusted until the calibration value represented by that calibration scale indication is shown on the digital display unit. The two reference indications are then placed at the two ends of the indication to be measured, and the ratiometric voltmeter output, shown on the digital display unit, then represents that measured value.
