Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for operating a port fuel and direct injection fuel system of a rolling variable displacement engine (rVDE). In one example, a method may include selecting between controlling a lift pump of the fuel system to output fuel at a mechanically limited pressure and controlling the lift pump to output fuel at a pressure lower than the mechanically limited pressure based on whether port fuel injection is used. In this way, the lift pump may be controlled without feedback from a pressure sensor, reducing system costs, while electrical power consumption increases due to operating the lift pump to output fuel at the mechanically limited pressure are minimized due to the rVDE technology, which reduces port fuel injection usage.

Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump includes: a pump body that forms a suction passage and a pressurizing chamber and slidably supports a plunger; and a control valve that opens a connection between the suction passage and the pressurizing chamber in a suction stroke, during which the plunger is driven toward a suction side for suctioning fuel into the pressurizing chamber, while the control valve controls closing timing, at which the connection between the suction passage and the pressurizing chamber is closed by the control valve in a delivery stroke, during which the plunger is driven toward a delivery side for delivering the fuel out of the pressurizing chamber. The pump body forms a release passage that is communicated with the suction passage. The release passage relieves the fuel, which is pressurized by the plunger, from the pressurizing chamber before the closing timing during the delivery stroke.

Abstract: A fuel system includes a fuel pump having an inlet and an outlet. The fuel system also includes a jet pump assembly having a first fuel passage defined by a first tube, the first fuel passage having a first fuel passage inlet and a first fuel passage outlet; and a second fuel passage defined by a second tube and connected to the outlet of the fuel pump, the second fuel passage having an exit orifice which discharges a first flow into the first fuel passage which draws a second flow into the first fuel passage through the first fuel passage inlet such that the first flow and the second flow combine in the first fuel passage and exit the first fuel passage through the first fuel passage outlet. The second fuel passage also has an initial orifice arranged upstream from, and in series with, the exit orifice.

Abstract: An engine fuel system includes a fuel delivery system including a first fuel pump that is coupled to a pressure relief valve that is arranged in parallel with a second fuel pump. The first fuel pump is disposed to deliver pressurized fuel to the second fuel pump and the pressure relief valve, and the second fuel pump is disposed to deliver pressurized fuel to the fuel rail. A controller characterizes the first fuel pump to determine a relationship between a fuel pump speed and a fuel pump current at a setpoint pressure for the pressure relief valve. A feed-forward pump speed command is determined based upon a target fuel pressure and a fuel flowrate. A closed-loop pump speed is commanded based upon the characterization of the fuel pump. The first fuel pump is controlled to deliver fuel to the second fuel pump based thereon.
