摘要: A cylinder for an internal combustion opposed-piston engine includes a bore, either as part of the cylinder directly or of a liner. The bore has a surface for guiding a pair of pistons disposed for opposing movement in the cylinder. The cylinder bore has three zones of surface finishes: an inner zone extending between and including exhaust and intake ports, where only piston compression rings travel on the bore surface; two instances of an outer zone where only piston oil control rings travel on the bore surface; and two instances of a port zone where both types of rings travel on overlapping paths in the same bore surface portion. Each zone may have a particular surface finish that is tailored to specific requirements including oil control, ring wear, and scuff resistance relevant to the zone.

Specifically, this is an engine with two crankshafts, two piston heads facing each other in a single cylinder, with the following features: compact size relative to a comparable design, improved or equivalent performance to a comparable design as a result of any of the following: locating crankshafts in a different plane from the cylinder axes; the use of shared duct structures; and the use of an embedded compressor chamber for efficient operation to cover all volumetric requirements, fulfilling the entire thermodynamic cycle, and performing in addition the sweeping and overloading of air or an air/fuel mixture in the cylinder combustion chamber in each revolution of two or more crankshafts, either with or without advancement between the crankshafts.

In one example, a flow through a mechanically driven supercharger is adjusted to provide engine braking for a two stroke diesel engine when engine braking is requested. The level or amount of engine braking may be adjusted via increasing or decreasing flow through the mechanically driven supercharger.

摘要: Control of airflow in a uniflow-scavenged, two-stroke cycle, opposed-piston engine during transient operation includes monitoring at least one operating parameter of the engine to recognize a transition to a transient state of engine operation. If a transient state of operation is detected, fuel injection and airflow into to the cylinders of the engine are controlled to optimize combustion and limit emissions. Airflow into cylinders of the engine may be controlled by increasing a scavenging ratio of the engine or by increasing a trapping efficiency of the engine.

摘要: Technology is provided for a bilateral engine control system for use on a multi-cylinder opposed piston engine. The system includes first and second sets of injectors, each set mountable on first and second sides of an engine. Each injector is in fluid communication with a corresponding cylinder of the engine. First and second engine control units are each connected to a respective set of injectors. First and second crankshaft speed sensors are connected to respective engine control units. The first engine control unit independently controls the first set of injectors based on a first speed signal and the second engine control unit independently controls the second set of injectors based on a second speed signal. The first engine control unit and the second engine control unit are configured to activate corresponding injectors of the first and second sets of injectors at substantially the same time.

摘要: An engine block for an opposed-piston engine includes a first center section and a second center section. The first center section defines a first cylinder half bore having a first longitudinal axis and a first plurality of fastener bores. The second center section defines a second cylinder half bore having a second longitudinal axis and a second plurality of fastener bores that extend from a first end thereof to a second end thereof. The second center section is configured to abut the first center section such that: the first and second cylinder half bores are in fluid communication with one another to collectively form a single cylinder; the first and second longitudinal axes are offset from one another; and the first and second pluralities of fastener bores are aligned with one another for receiving a first plurality of fasteners to join the first and second center sections to one another.
