An electrolyte solution for electroplating can include an alkali metal citrate, an alkali metal acetate, a citric acid, and glycine with a metal salt. An electrolyte solution can be formed by dissolving an alkali metal citrate, an alkali metal acetate, a citric acid, and glycine in water or an aqueous solution. Electrodepositing zinc-iron alloys on a substrate can include introducing a cathode and an anode into an electrolyte solution comprising an alkali metal citrate, an alkali metal acetate, a citric acid, and glycine. Electrodepositing can further include passing a current between the cathode and the anode through the electrolyte solution to deposit zinc and iron onto the cathode.

In one embodiment, the new composition comprises the reaction product of(A-1) at least one nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound with(A-2) at least one hydroxyamine;(A-3) an epihalohydrin, glycerolhalohydrin or mixtures thereof; and(A-4) at least one amino compound containing at least one N--H group to form the desired polymeric composition.Aqueous alkaline zinc electroplating baths containing the compositions of the invention with or without cyanide present, deposit a bright and lustrous zinc coating on metal over a wide range of current densities.

There is disclosed a process for electrodepositing zinc involving the use, as brightening additives, of complex mixtures containing salts of di-(1-benzyl-3-carboxyl-1,2-dihydropyridyl-2) ether and the salts of the corresponding sulfides and polysulfides. The use of the latter additives leads to the preparation of zinc coatings characterized by their excellent smoothness, brightness, luster and adherance.
