摘要: This application discloses magnetically coupled integrated probes and probe systems, attachable to the robotic arms of a remotely operated vehicle to perform both cathodic protection (CP) voltage measurements and ultrasonic testing (UT) thickness measurements at an underwater surface. The integrated probe system can include a spring for coupling to an ROV end effector. An ultrasonic probe is disposed within and extends from the sleeve housing. A magnetic carrier, flux concentrator, and gimbal surround a portion of the ultrasonic probe, and one or more electrically conductive legs extend from the front surface of the gimbal to function as a CP probe. The legs are arranged about the ultrasonic probe, which has a flexible membrane exposed at the front surface of the gimbal, such that during inspection, at least one leg contacts the surface and the ultrasonic probe is sufficiently proximate to provide substantially simultaneous CP and UT measurements.

摘要: In a method for cathodically protecting and/or passivating a metal section in an ionically conductive material such as steel reinforcement in concrete or mortar, an impressed current or sacrificial anode communicates ionic current to the metal section and a storage component of electrical energy which can be a cell, battery or capacitor is provided as a component of the anode. A current limiter is provided which prevents excess current draining the supply. This can be a semi-conductive device such as a transistor or diode is connected in the path from the anode to the metal section to limit the cathodic protection current to a value of the order of 1 milliamp. When a diode or similar device is used the current can be limited to the reverse leakage current of the diode.

摘要: The metal tank portion of an electric water heater is protected against corrosion utilizing a corrosion protection system that detects a voltage potential between the sheath portion of a tank water-immersed electric heating element and the tank. In one embodiment of the corrosion protection system the sensed sheath/tank potential is utilized to enable a user of the water heater to accurately gauge the necessity of replacing a sacrificial anode extending into the tank. In another corrosion protection system, the sensed sheath/tank potential is utilized to provide impressed current cathodic protection of the tank and also to prevent dry firing of the electric water heater.

摘要: A marine ICCP system includes an electrical circuit comprising a primary and a secondary circuit. The primary circuit comprises a first electrode connected to a positive terminal of a power source to act as an active anode; and a second electrode connected to a negative terminal of the power source. The secondary circuit comprises a passive electrode normally disconnected from the electrical circuit and arranged to act as back-up protection, wherein the second electrode connectable to the passive electrode. The passive electrode is arranged to be connected to the power source if a detected output voltage in the primary circuit reaches a maximum value and if a determined polarization potential for the cathode is insufficient. The control unit is operable to control the output voltage supplied to the primary and secondary circuits separately in order to supply an individual output voltage to each circuit.

In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a single measurement sensor coating (thin film) sensor. Other embodiments relate to multiple measurement sensor coating systems. The sensor is comprised of either a discrete conductive filament layer, or a single or multiple mesh of interwoven filaments of conductive material in one direction and nonconductive material in a perpendicular direction, as a substrate coated with sensitive coating materials to form a sensor grid. Various embodiments of the sensor coating and their applications are also disclosed.

摘要: A portable unit is arranged to measure a value for polarized potential in a corrosion protection system comprising a protected structure, an anode and a reference electrode, which portable unit is connectable to the protected structure and to the reference electrode. The portable unit is arranged toperform voltage measurements to detect and monitor an instant-off sequence, wherein the corrosion protection system is turned off for a predetermined time period during normal operation. If an instant-off sequence is detected, then a voltage measurement is performed to measure a voltage signal representing a direct current potential curve for the corrosion protection system during the instant-off sequence. A step response detected in the voltage signal during an initial IR drop and a subsequent voltage decay are analysed. An initial value for the voltage signal at the time of the step response is determined and displayed as a value for polarized potential.
